Best motor route?
Right now I have a D16z6 out of the car in unknown condition. in the car I have a D15b2. I was wondering what would make more HP/tq. Should I swap in the whole z6 motor, or should I just put the Z6 head on the block thats in the car. It will be an NA build as I have no desire to fool with turbo's. Either way the head will be sent to the machine shop for refurbishing.
I am thinking that the head swap will be the easier/cheaper route but I think the Z6 will give me a little bit more tq and will be more reliable because i'll probably rebuild it.
If I am missing any info just let me know and I will fill in the blanks if I can.

hehe so mean... but an important question to ask!
i've been wondering this myself, which motor swap would be best. i think a jdm zc motor swap is the easiest and cheapest based on $/hp terms. look into it and it requires no fabrication! direct bolt on.

I already have the Z6. whole motor. Dizzy, intake manifold, block, head.
I guess what would It cost to rebuild the Z6 and how much power would it make vs. the price/power of the head swap.

When the only options are "mini me" and "D16" why would anyone say "b18" or "y8". I dont have the money for either. If I did, I wouldnt be to worried about the cost to rebuild the z6.
soo much bashing for no reason. anyways i got some experience in your department so im going to help you out.
I had a eg ex coupe with a z6 head on a stock d15b2 and typical bolt ons and it made decent power. I raced my buddy in his 94 Si hatch with stock z6 and typical bolt ons and i pulled on him. Same transmissions and his car was lighter. So with some mild head work im sure youll be happy with the result. I think just swapping the head would be just as difficult as swapping the whole motor since youll have to do the same wiring in order for it to work correctly.

DD the b2 while you rebuild the z6. My $0.02 Especially if you dont know what condition the z6 is in right now. Any clues about its mileage? Was it running when it came out of its previous engine bay?
The guy I bought the car from gave me the Z6. he said he was cleaning out one of his buddies rental homes and found the motor. so I have no knowledge of the Z6 at all.
Thanks for the help guys.

When i was looking at rebuilding a d16a6, I called around to machine shops to see what it would cost to have the block and head all aligned and honed. then i priced out gaskets, seals, rings etc. took me a while to figure everything out, but honestly it gave me a better idea of what I needed to do/ buy than opening a thread would.
If you can do the work yourself why not try installing the Z6 and find out how it runs in the first place if at all,it will only take some time and possibly an obd0 to obd1 converter harness(if you have the ECU).
Every thing you do will need to be done to run either the engine or the head swap anyway and at least you will know how the engine is and what you need to do to it.

the people suggesting b series arent that out of line... if you use the money youd save from building the d16 and the money you could get from selling the complete d16, maybe even the d15 too, youd have plenty for a nice ls or maybe even a b16. just something to take into consideration.
well, im not totally sure, dont see them for sale often, but id say probably 300-400 for the d16, maybe a hundred or two for the d15, another hundred at least for the tranny if its manual (i could be off a bit but thats probably about right). so right there youre sittin on 600, plus you must have another few hundred if you were planning a rebuild... i see ls's go for 400-500 all the time.
