Default 98 accord trans problem

Hello to all, I am new to the site, obviously, I am hoping to get some input on a problem with my daughters car.
It is a 2.3 auto car, when in park and neutral there is a grinding, whirring noise coming from trans that goes away when in gear at idle, but driving you can hear it also just not as loud.

Converter, bearing?

Anyone know what this is?

Thanks Mike T

There is a known problem with 98-02 automatics. Factory rebuild units still have the same issue.

Yet no formal recall occurred. In Canada, recall letters were sent out to owners who fell within a certain VIN range, this warranty was later re-extended for some owners to 7 years 11 months in length.
May want to have the car checked out at the local Honda dealer if the car falls within the mileage. They may do a goodwill replacement.

Thanks for the info.
I have heard some of the rebuilt ones have the same issue, and I was told to drain trans and check magnet for bits of metal and if it is just fuzz not to worrry.

I will do this today.
Thanks again much appreciated!

The issue is the transmission will wear out the clutch packs seems 2nd is the problem. You may not get that much fuzz on the bolt if its clutch material and not ferrous metal.
FWIW when the transmission in the '95 EX crapped out it began to make whirring sounds as well.

Yea I drained the fluid and found some fuzz on the bolt , no big chunks , but when I poured out the fluid from the pan there was guite a bit of small shiny particles in the bottom.
It shifts fine 90% of the time but sometimes it won't shift into 2nd unless you let off the gas.
Guess I need to find a donor.

Thanks again,
Mike T
