Roma Red Clearcoat is a two-stage paintjob. A darker red base (with warmer orange tones), and a regular clear. No pearl, no metallic, no mica.

Milano Red Tricoat is a three-stage paintjob. A brighter red base, a tinted mid-coat (lighter red, adds some warm pink tones and depth), and a clearcoat on it. No pearl, no metallic, no mica.

This is a photo of the two cars above (years ago) next to each other. These are the EXACT SAME CARS.
Certainly not the best photo to show off each paint color, but this shows how the two paint colors compare next to each other though. This is as close to what they looked like in comparison that I could find.

The left one's paint is in better condition, but also Milano provides quite a bit more depth than Roma. The one on the left is the coupe (milano) and on the right is the hatch (roma).
The left one is mine and it's paint certainly was in better condition than the one on the right.
In the US for 1996-2000 Civics the coupes were Milano Red and the hatches were Roma Red. Sedans came in neither. That's the easy way to tell.
MILANO IT IS. THANK YOU BOTH
also do either of you know about how much a paint job with this color will run me? I know there is no way to tell for sure. but a rough estimate?
I haven't seen your car besides the avatar (if that's even your car).
The cost of a paint job can depends on who paints it, where you live, what kind of paint they use and what method they use to paint it.
You're really going to need to make your own calls to figure out what it's going to cost. I'd recommend you try to find people who have recently had cars painted in your area and use that to base your opinion upon.

The supplies alone could end up costing around 400+ easily.
I just painted a Yamaha R6...the clear/paint/hardener/reducer all came out to about 120 and that was the "Wandas Line" It's a budget line off of a bigger company...then you throw in costs of sandpaper/scuff pads/tape/paper/laquer thinner or mineral spirits/tac cloths/body filler if you have some dents/primer and so on and so forth.
Just save yourself some time and don't go to a Maaco paint shop or Facto-bake...I don't know if they even still have those...but either way Maaco can have perfect results one day...and their painters might be high as hell the next and screw your paint up, paint all of your seals and mouldings, overspray onto your lights and windows etc.
Best of luck with the search though. Sometimes alot of the painters at certain shops do work on the side for WAY cheaper with nice results so ask around.
hey all thank you for all the help and advice. it is much appreciated. Can you please keep the info coming? what color is the preferred red? in your own oppinion
I prefer Milano Red, but that probably has more to do with that I own that color and prefer coupes to hatches.
I've never heard much as far as any group preferring one color over the other. Just paint yours whichever YOU like.

I like the Milano.
@NOFX and Eran...can either of you provide experience with which; if either of them have a higher rate of UV fade or anything? I live in FL and alot of the Milano Red EJ8's have bad UV fade...and nobody in my area has the Roma Red on anything that I've noticed so I don't know about that. I know alot has to do with the care put in to wash/wax/detail etc...just curious if either are notorious for that or if it's just the lack of attention people put into their hondas around here.

We only had one car of each and the coupe was from Delaware and the hatch from Oregon/Washington. Two totally different weather conditions for years and years.
I also believe I owned the coupe a little longer than he owned the hatch and I put a LOT of time into keeping that car clean (I used to wash it in the winter when the pipes froze by carrying buckets out of the kitchen through the garage).
'96-'00 coupes seem much more common than the hatches, plus Milano Red was used on '92-'95 Civics (all bodies in the US) and other models. it makes sense that we'd hear more about the bad aspects of that paint color, i.e. "Milano Pink".
If you want to see what new Milano Red paint looks like, keep your eyes open for the red Fits or CR-Zs.
The only color on '96-'00 Civics that I've ever heard of having problems was Dark Amethyst Pearl, which had a decently high rate of clearcoat failure and paint separating from the primer. I actually have a thread about that in the '92-'00 Civic section somewhere.
Neither Milano Red or Roma Red are known for clearcoat peeling or paint peeling. Neither is known for having bad orange peel. Milano Red is known to look pink easily, but this could be because of the pinkish tones already in the paint (again, Roma has similar tones, but they come out orangish instead).
Modern paint doesn't have so much of a problem with "fading". The problem is usually oxidation, which is just this film that forms on the surface of the paint due to rain, snow, chemicals, sun, bird poo, bugs, etc. This film tends to have a pale bluish tint to it, which seems to show up on bright, brilliant reds quicker than other colors.
I've owned that Milano Red coupe for over seven and a half years now. I detail it by hand and for the last two or so years have been parking it in the garage. I've never had an issue with "fading".
