My sohc zc passed smog no problem.. But my cousin knows a place that did it for him for $200. I'm trying to get a reach of him and I'll pm you the info.
Cool let me know asap....im new to zc motors myself im not even sure on the specs all i know is it came outta a 96-00 straight from japan with ZC stamped on the block.
1st problem is you have a ZC in an ek. Just because they are similar internally does not mean the motor belongs in that car. That motor is for 88-91 civics. I'm sure you already knew that. That is the reason why next to no smog techs want to touch it. The guy that did touch it probably just wanted your money. He knew it wouldn't pass and you'd pay anyway to have it tested.
Sell that ZC and put the correct year engine or newer back in there and you'll be just fine. Just be sure to use the correct ecu, and smog equipment for that year motor. The longer guys deal w/ illegal swaps, the longer the rest of us get harassed. Cops hand out ref tickets these days like free red bulls at a car show. Then we complain about smog laws in CA, instead of educating the folks that need help around us potentially making things better as a whole.

actually didnt pay anything cus i took it to my boy shop....i went by other shop just to see what they would say...and i like the power that it puts out nice fit and leaves me alot of room for upgrades...(So true!)Then we complain about smog laws in CA, instead of educating the folks that need help around us potentially making things better!
You can still build yourself a nice sohc/dohc, have power and still pass smog. When you borderline it you run into issues like myself. I myself should have done more research. A Honda engine bay is pretty huge in general, and just about any nice powerful setup can be had and still be smog legal. I was just trying to encourage down the path with less resistance.

i dont know where you got your info from but its completely false...they also make zc sohc motors for 92+ which are considered japanese replacement engines which are perfectly legal as long as you retain the USDM spec emissions equipment and that the motor is the same year or newer than the car its going into.

ask me how i know, i got a perfectly running zc sohc motor in my civic that is equivalent to the old d15b2/d16a6 motor which just passed smog with flying colors.
to the op use the new zc motor but use all the other external components to the old engine and you will be fine.
what...?????
