Hi guys,

Long story short, I purchased the wrong igniter (Electric Systems brand, Honda #06302-pt2-000, new from a forum so I cant return it) and now am hesitant to spend another 165 dollars to get the one specific to my distributor (Hitachi brand, Honda #30120-p06-005).

So I was wondering if any of you guys knew of the difference between the various igniters that Honda uses (NEC, Hitachi, OKI, etc). My research says that the igniter is essentially a switch that magnifies amperage for the coil, no? Is there no difference besides mounting holes?

If it is just the mounting holes, can I use the mounting bracket (heat sink) from an accord/prelude: Amazon.com: OES Genuine Igniter Heat Sink for select Honda Accord/Prelude models: Automotive
to install the Electric Systems brand igniter into my distributor?

Has anyone done this?

The car is a 1996 Civic Ex ( D16y8 )

Any help is appreciated, aka information about the igniters or a known reputable source to get a new hitachi igniter for less than 165.

 

i've used hitachi and OKI igniters interchangeably before. They just have slightly different mounting brackets. Work the same though.

 

^ Where have you gotten the mounting brackets? Just off a spare distributor?

Did you notice any difference in spark or any other effects?

 

Sometimes, between the OKI and Hitachi you can just mod the bracket though. OKI will fit either bracket the same, if you use a Hitachi igniter on an OKI bracket though you will have to file down the little ears at the bottom. Mounting holes are in the same place.

Nope, only that I seem to have seen more Hitachi igniters go bad than OKI.

 

Alright, it looks like I will just run the electric systems one instead of the hitachi one since I got a different mounting bracket.
