i just bought a 1992 Civic si and the radiator fan is not working. I have replaced the water temp sensor and the thermostat. I have checked to see if fan motor is good and it is. my car is not overheating. could someone please tell me what the problem is?? Thanks

 

the car has to be over heating for the fan to kick on

 

check the fuse and relay in the fuse box. There is also a fan switch on the thermostat housing as well that could be bad.

 

not true. if the fan switch and fan are working properly the car should never overheat.

op: if it's particularly cold where you are or you haven't been sitting in traffic for long enough you might not be reaching the activation temp for the switch to turn the fan on. when it's colder out it's not uncommmon for the fan to rarely come on. not saying that is whats going on in your case though.

the fan switch is located on the thermostat housing. disconnect it and jump the 2 wire connector. the fan should now come on. if it doesn't, the problem is in the wiring or fan relay. if it does, this either means the fan switch is faulty, or as i said above the engine just isn't getting hot enough to need the fan. to test it and be sure you can pull the fan switch and heat it slowly in a suitable solution. hook it up to a multimeter and check for continuity. once the temp meets/exceeds 190 degrees you should see continuity. remove the heat and continuity should be removed somewhere between the 182-188 degree range. if it fails to operate as outlined, the sensor is defective.

If the fan runs continuously with the fan switch connector jumped, then first bleed the cooling system. If that doesn't fix the problem, replace the switch.
