I was replacing the cap and rotor on my D16z6 when a buddy of mine turned the motor over while the cap was off.... A massive spark jumped from the coil to the edge of the distributor housing...........

Now the motor wont fire up.... the is spark and fuel..... It did a massive back fire twice but thats it....

You most likely blew the coil inside the distributor. Here's how to test it:

Why were you changing the cap and rotor in the first place? because if you replaced all of that and it has spark and fuel I dont see how it wouldnt run unless it literally fried the wires in the harness. Which is very unlikely. Do you have any CEL's?

we were changing the cap and rotor as they have never been done since we bought the car...(16months) and i dint know when they were changed before that.... TBH it was pretty firred up.

the car is a 98 EJ9 with a swapped D16z6 which was done about 4 years ago.

UPDATE: we have the motor running now... so im guessing the plugs got damaged... BUT...
IF you 'blip' the throttle real fast, it cuts out and 'pops' then smoke comes out the intake????

we have checked the timing and the belt which is all correct....???

You may want to repeat the test based on this:

Smoke from the intake could possibly indicate a bad intake valve.

When you set the engine to TDC1, does it look like this:

to be far.. if you rev it gentle its great doesnt miss or splutter but its just when u 'blip' it fast it hesitates and pops then cuts out, afterwards its a it hard to start.

it has a AEM camgear on it so the marks are different but essential its like that... i use the mark on the timing belt pulley which lines up with the arrow on the oil pump housing.... is this correct?

The aem Camgear marks are not very well marked.... i mean, 1 lines up with the mark but the other side doesnt.....

Do you mean that you set the crank at TDC1 when the crank pulley is removed? Post pictures of this and your cam pulley at TDC1.

yup just like that...

But what im saying is that the camgears markings aint the best, both marks on the left and the right dont line up and there is no mark to line up with the lower mark on this cam gear......

am i making sense?

What I am sensing is that you are unsure whether the mechanical timing is set correctly, right?

Do the two horizontal marks on the cam gear align with the top surface of the head or the right and left arrows? The stock cam gear has the same marks on the rear to help with the alignment.

Post pictures at TDC1.

In some cases, the engine will run but poorly with the timing off by one tooth.
