Icon3 93 civic dx/b16 head/b18c block/stock p72 ECU -- hitting rev limiter at 6k

hi guys my car is hitting the rev limiter at 6k its a 93 civic dx
with a b16 head and a b18c block. i dont know what to do anymore
i was running a chipped p28 but changed to a stock p72 thinking that
it was the ecu, but that didnt help.could it be that im still running the
dx fuel pump? the car has been doing this sense i did the swap.

things that i have done to fix this.
new sparkplugs and wires
cap and rotor
timing
cleaned the grounds
changed from chipped p28 to stock p72

no cel's it does work. please guys any help and ideas on this issue would
be greatly appreciated

are you sure that the tach isnt off? Or does it hit VTEC when it should? Because I've seen tach's get horribly off due to electrical issues. Since you have no CEL's it could be the sensor in your dizzy that reads the RPM. Have you tried swapping dizzy's?

u know like it doesnt reach to its optimum operating temp.

mine is like that too. b16 bottom w/ gsr head. i switched from a p72 to a p30 and my rev limiter still hits at 7000rpm. some days my tach will read low for what MPH i'm at, but it never reads too high. i'm thinking distributor, but don't want to shell out the cash right now.

yeah i'm probably going to get a brand new one from distributor king when i have extra cash. with the old one i'll just toss it in my trunk for emergencies. let me know if the new distributor fixes your tach problem. better update this thread! lol

My friend has the same problem... He swap a B16A2 in his 95 cx and it won't pass 6k rpm with stock P61 ecu! But the vtec kicks! NO cel too! We tried changing the dizzy from my daily Gsr and it's still cuts off at 6k! Car runs fine and vtec pulls tho... He's looking for another si cluster and we'll see how it goes! Keep us updated!

along with the fuel filter but no change, so i guess im destined
to redline at 6k i'll update if anything comes up.

UPDATE

i have chipped my p28 with another map to take note of where the vtec was
catching i had it set to 5500 and it comes on at about 4800 so my tach is off
also with the new map it revs to 7000 all day long which is still not right as i
have the limiter set to 8500 i will be swapping my tach for an aftermarket one
will update then

UPDATE

I swapped out the stock tach in the cluster for an autometer one and its spot on vtec
at 5500 and redline at 8500 all day long so i would tell anyone with the same issue to
take a look at there tach before changing any thing else.

thanks for the update. i finally pulled the trigger and just ordered a new distributor from distributor king. hopefully that solves the problem, but if not I will be getting a new gauge cluster or re-soldering the connections in my old one.

Good info bro! I have this same problem with my 94 cx with b16a2 but mine was the p28 ecu that church automotive chipped and it's cutting off at 6500rpm with no CEL! I changed dizzy, spark plugs, cluster, engine harness and injectors with no luck!!! I took it back to church hoping he would help me out but he wants to charge me $200 more to tune it (he said "MAYBE it'll fix the problem") on top of $150 that I paid for the ecu that he chipped.... F@k that **** lol! Then my friend told me to call chris from Natural Aspirations at riverside and he made me a deal that he'll fix it for $150 or I'll only pay $15!!!! He found out the p28 ecu from church was the problem!!! He tried his ecu and BAM!!! 8400 rpm all day and he street tuned it ,fixed my idle, cleaned my wiring and he added some grounds to the ecu!!! I'll recommend him to anybody, really cool guy!!! He even sold me that ecu for extra $100!!! Nice to know there's still good people out there! I just thought I'd share my experience with church...
