Timing Marks are F*&ked
So I finally got around taking a timing gun to my car.
Low and behold, as i expected it's messed.
Ok, on ur crank plully there are 4 marks no? u got ur 3 on the left being the 14, 16, and 18 degree mark, then a white one on the right marking off TDC.
Ok I dunno if this is even possible but when i took the gun to it, the arrow on my engine block is on the right hand side of everything, as in even right side of the TDC mark.
WTF is wrong with my timing. I took it out on road and everyting, used timin controller, etc and it's pulling pretty hard. NO knocking or smell of any sort. Does that mean I'm running stable or is my car's pistons gonna fry soon?

What kind of timing gun did you get? Does it have an advance setting?
Some timing guns use a 'advance' feature - you can set the gun to read 16DBTC and the arrows should line up to the white TDC mark.
If your gun has no advance feature - then your car shouldn't be running....
EDIT: Also a couple other things, first your car should be completely warmed up before checking the timing. Next look at the underside of your hood when it's open, there should be a vacuum daigram. Look below this daigram and it should give you some info about idle speed, AND timing, our 4g cars you have to disconnect a couple things before you check the timing, but each year is different.
The adjustments you need to make for your car should be labeled there in that daigram - otherwise buy a shop manual.

I just have a regular old timing gun - no settings or dials on it.
Damn I guess I should go exchange it.
"If your gun has no advance feature - then your car shouldn't be running...."
- So are u saying that I shouldn't even drive my car, or it shouldn't be running?
I have no diagram under the hood.
oh yeah, btw, it's a b16a.

if ur dont know how much of an advance ur runnig..for now i would pull the dizzy back to around the middle somewhere..not all the way forward or back..
im told that 1mm of turning on the dizzy moves the timnig 1 degree..
as for a timing gun..ive never used one..but i think i should being im using the n2o now! how much does one cost?

Well, the cost depends on how "powerful" u want it. I thikn base u can find ne for about $30, then from there it goes up - top end u looking at 4bills about.
Hmm, I pulled the dizzy back a bit (right now it's full out advance) and my car started to bog a bit with a lot of unburnt gas smell. Funny thing is my dizzy is advanced all the way and on top of that my timing controller is set to another 13 degrees. It wasn't like this b4 - it was after i got a dizzy change ... now I'm using the '90-'91 Teg LS one

Well I got the b16
Lookin at it from the side, the TDC mark (single white) is on the right side, while the 3 colored marks are on the left. The arrow is "suppose" be somewhere between that showing advance and retard.
i did a search and noted that some ppl who have had LS dizzys put in have messed up timing marks. So I think that's my problem.
Question: As long as there's no pingin/knocking throughout powerband I should be safe no?
Guess I gotta buy a digital timing gun now that works off only the white bar supposedly. Not sure
