Default how hard is it to replace a headgasket

my headgasket just slowly started to leak coolant out of the block so i know i need to replace it. I was wondering how hard it is to do and how long i should be expecting to spend on this considering this is my first time really going into an engine, besides just taking off the valve cover.

Also i was thinking that if i have to take the head and cams out would it be beneficial to go ahead and put in aftermarket cams, as well as maybe porting and polishing the head? or buying an already ported and polished head? any feedback is helpful

what engine do you have?? it depends on the person doing the head gasket, If its your first time get a manual so you have all the info you need. and it might take you awhile considering its your first time.

First recommendation is going to be pick up a service manual.

Also try searching, there might be a write-up.

Very good advice!
Not trying to be rude but since you have to ask and stated you are not familiar with wrenching I would advise getting someone with knowledge to help you with the process. That way you can do the work but have someone there coaching you.

You should also check to make sure the head is not warped, normally this can be done with a straight blade and flashlight.

Although not needed, if you have a power impact driver it will make things 10x easier just make sure you don't tighten your bolts all the way using this tool.

However, you MUST have a torque wrench if you plan on putting the head back on yourself.

Before you start, have you verified where the leak is? Spray some brake cleaner fluid around the area, drive it around then double check for leaks. Maybe the leak is coming from one of the hoses. (hopefully)
