Car: 90 DX hatch
Engine: SOHC ZC 1.6L
Trany: SI 5 Speed

Currently my 5th gear will not engage. I can shift smoothly from 1st-4th and reverse as well but when I try to engage 5th gear it feels like it is up against a wall.

Please post things to check, as transmissions are NOT my thing.

 

bad synchro? does it go into gear when the car's off?

 

Does not go into 5th while car's off.

Also ever since I did my engine swap the exhaust system moved slightly to the right, about an inch or so. The previous owner put a short shifter on the car and right after the engine swap the short shifter would hit the heat shield on the exhaust. I figured it would cause any problems so I just dented the side of the heat shield to **** so it wouldn't rub when shifting to 5th or Reverse.

I don't believe the short shifter is the problem.

 

are you sure that you don't have a 4-speed transmission in it? - sounds like it to me

 

LOL I used to have a 4spd and trick people into thinking they broke my 5th when they'd drive my car around.

Since the 5th gear has it's own shift fork and synchro hub, it would make sense that something internally is preventing it from shifting (something is broken)...or you have 4spd haha

I have a ZC transmission in my shop right now that has the 5th synchro sleeve frozen to the hub. I use it for parts, and am not sure how it got that way. Pull the box and open it up and see what you're dealing with.
