I've never done any sort of body work at all. So please bear with me on this.

I just pulled out my motor & removed everything in the engine bay before sending the car off to the paint shop. However I wanted to cover up some of the holes, remove seam filler & lightly weld seams together. I have access to MIG welder.




Q:
1) can i just weld up the holes and then take a grinding wheel and sand it down?
2) any tips or advice ?


To get a nice finish, I'll most likely need to use some sort of filler.
I don't want to do a completely shaved bay... just smooth out some ruff spots.

2) what kind of filler do I use?
3) is it as simple as it looks ? (apply good amount of filler, let it cure, start sanding down)
4) after sanding it down, is there anything else needed before i bring the car into the paint shop?

a great filler is evercoat...anything by that company is great to work with...get BLUE hardner with it. Also when you are applying the filler try to make it as smooth as you can so you dont have to sand for ever to get it smooth.


depends on what you are welding (on the rail, or rad support) you just really need to shut the holes up then grind it down so its smooth then filler over the welded holes

What grit wheel should I get form sanding/grinding down welds?

 

A good way to smooth down welds is with a flap disk grinder. Then apply your body filler. Evercoat Rage is great. After its dried and is fully hardened sand it with 80 grit sandpaper to get it roughly into shape. Then go to 180 grit paper to finish sanding. You may want to go over the filler lightly with 220 grit paper. Then apply a good high build primer. After the primer is dry sand it with 400 grit. Then go back over the primer lightly with 600 grit to make ensure you dont see any sand scratches. Then its ready for the paint.

 

what is "flap disk grinder".... any specific brand or grade?

 

i usually use a stone disk since i got 100 for free lol

you should be able to get evercoat at thoes places you stated...but im not 100 sure...IMO i HATE BONDO products and will never use them again
