Can you use a vinyl cutting machine to make a graphics overlay for painting?
Basically what I need is something to cut out a detailed design that is basically a sheet that has a sticky side. Apply the cut out design with the sticky back on the metal and then start pulling off cut segments of the design for different colors. Would a vinyl cutting machine work, if so what type of sticker material would work? If not any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Yes it will work. Do you want to remove the complete sticker on the end of the day?
Any thin vinyl sticker will work.
And how big is the job area?
Go to your local decal place and ask for some help

Well if you wanna do it right, you need to find a good source of vinyl cuz not all vinyls tend to stick well. And don't get the one that has massive adhesive on it cuz then it will be hard to take off or leave glue one the car paint. If ur design has to much detail in it, make sure the small pieces of vinyl stick well, or paint will seep under the vinly and ruin it. Decal shops are a good source, but they charge a lot for a small piece of vinyl, try to go to a local sign and paint supply shop, the sell the yard of vinyl cheaper. And all sorts of and adhesive mount type. That way you wont have any trouble paint or designing it. i design my on stickers.... good luck with your process
