Default Vtec engagement questions

I got a GSR swap in my tegy. My mods now are CTR pulley, 11.5 lbs flywheel, Competition stage four 6 puck clutch, skunk2 intake manifold, Hondata heat shield gasket, ram-air intake, and cat back exhaust.

It is running off a p28 chipped with Crome.

I noticed my vtec is engages at 6000 RPM. I thought that was kind of late since my redline is 8200. Only 2000 RPM of Vtec?

Is this when a stock P72 engages?

I talked to my tuner and he said I could lower it.

I was thinking about dropping it to 4800 RPM.

I know oil pressure needs to be high for everything to run smooth and I have heard lowering the Vtec engagement can actually make you lose power?

I was going to also start using Hamp oil filters just for a little piece of mind as well . . . . .

afaik vtec engages at 4800 and teh secondaries open at 6k so you should lower that engagement to get more out of your swap

4400 rpm is stock vtec engagement point for a 1998 Gsr with the stock obd2 p72 ecu. Personally its a little low for daily driving. I converted to obd1 and I had it set at 4700 rpm just to be different, but it is more manageable for daily driving. I always found that vtec would engage right before i would shift making the car sound very odd. Now its much better.

I figured since I got the Skunk2 manifold I'd want it lower. Thanks for the advice!

4400rpm engagement, butterflies open at 5800 rpm on a stock p72 head using stock p72 computer.

Check with whoever tuned the car, since they are probably the ones who programmed it to kick in that late. Usually with a skunk2 manifold you would put it up in the 5200-5800 range according to how modified the engine and fuel system are.
