Gear housing Axles Seal... Leak,, advise me please!
So the transmission was leaking from the halfshaft side and i replaced the seal which is pressed in and i did so. the new seal is the same as the old seal but while looking at it installed with the axle going into the gear box the seal doesnt touch the axle there is a big gap. is that how it suppost to be? is the metal cap on the half shaft what seals it all up or do i have something wrong? it seems that old worn out metal cap isnt going to seal up much no matter how much i try and scoot it over to the seal.. what am i doing wrong cause trans fluid is now all over my floor..
Okay the answer is.. The sliding cap on the half shaft seals it. but mine is bent and thats why its leaking.. so i got mad and permatexed the **** outta that bitch and now its not leaking.
im having this same problem. i just installed a ys1 tranny in my 92 da. i had this trans sitting around for the last 3 years. i just pulled my motor and trans to do a whole timing belt, wp, tensioner. and while i was at it i put this trans on. the int shaft looks like its not going into the trans all the way and i just ran to honda and bought a new axel seal. after changing it i just took the car out for a ride and when i doubled back, sure enough, there was a nice trail of trans fluid. what is this cap that you speak of cause i didnt loose anything when i was pulling everything out with the motor. and there is nothing left on the old trans. i just popped the int shaft out and then slid it right back in with the new stuff. idk what to do now. im soo pissed at this car! nothing will go right! any pics of this cap would be helpful.
oh and this car was a basket case when i got it. it was even missing 5 out of 6 coder pins up front in the knuckle! so the original owner could have replaced the axel and never put this cap back on.
ok so today i took the axel out and after looking at my old trans and then looking at the ys1 and then looking at the old trans and then again at the ys1, i figured out that i had pushed the oil seal in too far and it was not mating up witht he end of the axel. for after taking it back out again i pushed the seal in just far enough to where the outer rim was flush witht he diff housing and then put it all back together and with the front jacked up and wheels off i put it in first gear and let the hubs spin. i crawled undernieth and inspected it and nothing was leaking. i topped it off and then went for a test drive. inspected it again and everything seams good. just goes to show you have to look at the little details and make sure you put things back the way they should have been.
