ive gotten to the stage of releasing the c clip on the counter shaft and after prying it apart about 50 times with a pair of screw drivers i can get the counter shaft released from the clip. even after prying the casing apart about an inch and hold the c clip open it stil wont release. my next option out of frustration is the sledge hammer the **** apart so i can get the 5th gear out and swap it into another transmission...
any suggestions please?

Elevate the trans from the ground with blocks of wood. Get some needle nose pliers to open the clip. If the bearing is still stuck, have a friend take a 3/8" extension or something that will fit on the bearing between the pliers and tap on it with a hammer to dislodge it. Some can be tight at times. Usually not though. They *should* fall right down.

I recomend using the correct tools...a pair of snap ring pliars would work magic. Your prob just not opening the c clip enough.
Extra hands might work in this situation; while you spread the clip, let someone lift the case.
