Default Easy Tach Question - Shows 0 - Smack, shows correct rest of trip

Good Morning,

Easy Tachometer question. Stock 90 CRX HF.

Sometimes, when I start the car, the tach stays at zero, a little tap to the top of the cluster (dome), and it jumps right up where it should be, and operates fine the rest of the trip.

Engine sounds right, RPMs are correct.

So... I would assume to check the cluster wire (remove and replace the cluster, inspect connectors and wires for corrosion, loose connection, or other issues)

or... This is a known symptom of a failing cluster. Just wanted to know the likelyhood of that. Anything else to check? Like I said, easy question.

[and my search-fu was poor this morning... it appears everyone is running a swapped car, different ecu, different cluster, etc!]

I think the needle might just be getting stuck, you might be able to take the cluster out and put a little oil on the tach motor. Not sure if that would fix it but worth a try.

Never heard of that one before. Is this a known issue/somewhat common?

It happens maybe 1 out of 10 starts.

Haha, ironic that I have the exact same problem, started 3 days ago but its not everytime I start the car, but mines with a different cluster.
I give mine a slight tap and it works fine (100% all over the board works precisely) but I'm not gonna mess with it until it just stops working completely.

To be honest, I've completely forgotten what gauge cluster mine's from. I can never find a picture of it. I believe it's an SI one but currently cannot find a picture of it.

Mine had done it for years. I almost care enough to fix it, but I just give a light tap or flick and it works.
