Default Did I Go Overboard with Spring Rates?

I just got coil-overs for my 91 Civic Si.....with spring rates of 16k F / 14k R

Did I go way overboard? I just want to do track days and autox.

Also, they are J's N1 by Crux Engineering.

Since nobody is responding to you, and you dont know how to "google"
Your front is 895lbs
rear is 784lbs

Bigger question yet is ..You spent 4500, on a set of j's racing shocks?
You mention you just want to do autox and track days??
Whats your experience level?
4500 isnt money well spent if you are a beginer.
However if your shocks were rated to handle those rates you are ok.
If your experience level is that of a noob you shouldnt be putting the cart before the horse.
Buying something that expensive (IDK maybe you have money falling out of your behind) isnt very wise.
Money is better spent on seat time and learning.

If it's a street car, yes, those are too stiff. If it's a dedicated track car, no, they should be ok.

Come out to the next HC race at Buttonwillow next weekend and talk to all of us there. You'll likely learn a lot!

I spent $300 on them

and it's the stock spring rates for the coil-overs so I assume that's proper for the shocks.

I'd say you're alright. Those are quite low rates for a stock weight car. It'll be jittery, a bit uncomfortable, and a bit harsh on the street, but might be great on a track.

If you're up for a 6 hour drive next weekend, you could visit Putnam park for the NASA event. I believe there are 2 honda challenge entries, both with civics (dunno what year). Then again, that is a still a long way to go for a weekend when you're not driving it.

Where did you get them for $300? Even on yahoo japan in decent condition they still run 1K.

Weird situation

-I find legit TE37's on Craigslist for $200
-I'm not a fan of TE37's appearance wise (and I wanted to make a quick buck or get something I needed)
-I pm a member here offering a trade for the c/o's
-He accepts I ship them for $70
-I get J's N1 coil-overs for $270

lucky bastid. And uh, dirty19, that response was so unnecessary.

And like everyone else said that should pretty well on the track, although personally im not a fan of stiffer rates in the front. Might be a little harsh on the street.

My big complaint is nobody searches....
Its becoming this forum has many many many rundundant threads.
Google searches will show many HT threads past, and present on everything posted here.
The mods even posted a sticky on how to search.. How much easier can it be?
Since everyone is more than happy to help those who are lazy, or just plain stupid in thinking their question is a first time a problem.. we will continue to have 20 pages on spring rates, tires, bearings, *** gaskets and what ever other mundane repetitive questions have been asked a gazillion times since the dawn of time.
Look at the new post today on how someones seat is too high and the helmet is hitting the roof???
Thats been covered many times and yet our posters seem to think its a new thing and nobody has ever had this issue.
The regulars here are all accomplished racers and mechanics. They know how to search and find information.
There is a plethora information out there.. all you have to do is search!

Now if our poster found j's shocks for 300.. id say wow, considering they sell for many times more than that. A Good score if they are in good shape!
Sounds like he could turn a paperclip into a porsche just by bartering alone.
Just search and the information is out there.

I wondered if I could just switch the springs around? They seem to all be the same size? But I didn't because I thought it'd make the ride even worse and the shocks wouldn't be set up for the rates

I know I should use the search function, but this is the one site I prefer to just start a thread, because frankly H-T has a terrible search function imo.

And thanks for the last part haha, sadly I've been lacking on finding good deals for a while

you know what your right, but i wasnt talking about that. You went off randomly, and quite frankly you were bashing the guy on how you 'thought' he spent too much money on something that he didnt need. What right do you have to tell him he shouldnt have bought expensive coilovers, and instead practice with seat time?

I understand you have an opinion, but what you came off a little harsh on a simple situation.

And teal, to your question, i dont think you can switch the springs, arent they different lengths?

I don't remember, I installed them a couple months back......I thought they were.....but I'll have to check.....all I really know is that the fronts don't go anywhere near as low as the backs......If that matters for anything I don't know....

I'm a suspension n00b.

If you think Im being harsh?? A mod would of probably tore him a new one, and locked the thread but since they dont patrol the posts like they used to, we are seeing more and more redundant posts.
Pretty frustrating when we see 20 posts in one week about tires or springs.
Hmmm... what right do I have to tell him what he should and should not spend on expensive parts... Well, none, its his money, but as we see time and time again we have many newbs putting the kart before the horse. They build a track car and not even know how to drive it
Its obvious our poster bought someones used up shocks, didnt know what valving they are capable of holding and is now asking us to look into a crystal ball and tell him is what he bought ok.
I guess maybe your too sensitive and dont read here much. I dont know what to tell you.
Our deal seeker admitted he doesnt search. That only solidifies my stance.

I don't search on HERE. Any other site and I'm the same guy as you telling n00bs to search.

You know the search system is messed up when you click to view threads started by a member....and it shows threads started by other members

So use google.
You'll find HT threads come up there too, and a much more robust search than the site has.
Sad but true.

If you are looking for information, the search instructions in the sticky here WILL work. Its a different search engine than the old one, but actually works pretty well if you use it properly.

The "search by user" or "find posts by user" function has been screwed up forever, and apparently will never be fixed. That one function alone is completely broken, but the rest work fine.

Since you got your information, and since its RRAX policy, I'm locking this now. Consider this an update for you on searching this site.
