Default Quick question...

I'm not running FI yet, but am wondering... when running FI, your engine get's hotter right? That's what our instructors have said. In this scenario what would be a good preventative engine failure procedure: Running thicker engine oil or running oil through oil coolers or both?

I have yet to take the engine performance class where this is talked about in more detail. Also is there such a thing as liquid cooled oil coolers?

Thanks

Default Re: Quick question...

yes the engine will create more heat. anytime you compress a gas (air) it will generate heat, diesels work because of this.

in my turbo civic i run 10w-30 and run an oil cooler. some people run even thicker oil but 10w-30 is just my preference.

as far as avoiding engine failure, cooling the oil is always a good idea to avoid breakdown but more importaintly, use parts that can withstand more heat and pressures such as forged pistons.

stock honda oil coolers are 'liquid cooled' in a way. coolant flows around the cooler which helps warm the oil quicker when its cold and cool it when oil temps exceed the coolant temps. i never used one because i dont see it as very affective. my oil is about 140-180F and my coolant ranges from 170-200F
