Default My LS/VTEC Engine Build on a Budget

I picked up a B18A1 block for a friend and we plan on building it together. I have built several other LS bottom ends in the past back to stock/ low compression and this may be the first "higher compression" build i have done considering the other 3 were for boost. The bore size will be stock and i will use stock LS rods with ARP rod bolts... Reving to 9k of course

Here is the setup i plan on running...

b18a1 block
81mm
stock crank
stock deck height
3 layer hg
p30 pistons on ls rods with arp's
bone stock GsR head with bolt ons

Compression Calculator Link
After figuring out my compresssion it came down to this... 11.818402415705081

Note: I am not trying to make a ton of power and i am building this motor for fun. You can see the last motor i built in my build thread

Those compression calculators are never right....and revving to 9k on stock gsr head without springs and retainers = trouble and completely stupid without upgraded cams

Revving to 9k on this? I don't know how long that'll last but lets find out.

like i said this is a build on a budget. im going to try and make the most power i can for the lowest price. if it blows up i honestly will not care i want this to be an experiment motor since it will be built for next to nothing

Valvetrain, clearance, balancing, and fastener strength are the top list that i can think of for things to address when wanting to rev these motors high. You can't just pick one (arp rod bolts) and disregard the other areas and expect it to hold together. Invest the extra$ 200 on valvetrain and the couple of bills your trusted machine shop would charge to balance the rotating assembly. You would only regret it if you didn't. Bseries motor supply is already dwindling down. Take care of them. They aren't produced anymore.

I can guarantee no matter how much money you have, if it blows and is irrepairable, at that moment, you will care, even if for only a few hours while you're waiting for a tow. Spend the extra$ 4-500 now and greatly increase the odds of that never happening.

the machining is being done by me... hone, balance, resizing rods so that technically is free. i am also going to try to write my first map for the motor and try to tune it. all my other LS block were machined by me and they turned out great. i bored 2 .20 over and one just a hone. i am not a professional, but i know i pretty good amount. enough to build a reliable motor and have it last
