S2000's have a lot of problems!
That's what I was told. Anyways im looking to get one soon but a family friend that has one warned me about all the problem, the biggest being a transmission problem that he is dealing with thats going to cost him a few grand to fix and he says happens to most s2ks.
So tell me what you guys know please.

If he had a transmission problem that cost him a couple grand to fix his opinion should be ignored.
Some of the very early cars suffer from "clutch buzz" and the tailshaft bearings are sort of weak (mine failed at 112k) but besides that the transmission is fine. Tailshaft bearing can be done with the transmission in the car and is $150 in parts IIRC.
Just do a typical checkover of the car and you should be fine.

The early AP1s seem to have more problems than others, but that's not really different from any other make/model. The manufacturers don't always get it right the first time and it usually takes a year or two to "get all the bugs worked out".
I had zero problems and beat the **** of my 00 day in and day out the old girl took it like a champ. if you maintain the car and know how to drive it will at least give you ur monies worth
maybe he had a synchro go out and brought it to the stealership.... and to him that means all s2k tranny's are bad and repairs are expensive....

Honda design cars to last a long time. Even the sports car follow the same philosophy.
Stupidly simple car to look after with no 'common' day to day issues.

I've had my S for 4 years now, put 40,000 miles on it and still not 1 issue. I replaced the spark plugs and flushed all the fluids. THAT'S IT!
My only 2 problems so far is I don't have enough power and I spend too much money on my car.
My advice is don't listen to your family friend, hop on s2ki and read about how great the car is and buy one. I promise you it is the cheapest most fun car you will buy. Handles great from the factory, power is ok, looks sharp, and as long as you treat the s2k good it will do the same for ya.

My experience..... * bent valves, messed up spark plug threads, worn out exhaust guides. I'm at about 3k in repairs and I only have 46k. It's an 00. Don't get me wrong I love the car to death, but yes you can break it pretty fast if your not careful. Make sure it idles really smooth otherwise i would suspect bent valves.
^ damn that sucks dude. My neighbor has 2000 S2K w/ 68,000 miles n the only thing he had to replace was coil packs. He does maintain the car well, but I guess it all depends on the owner n how well it is maintained.
I'm the second owner of my 2005 S and so far so good!

If you open the case you generally replace anything even close to out of spec because the parts are cheap and the labor is already done. That's why pretty much any time anyone drops the tranny for an issue it's $800 at least.
I have had my S2000 for 4 years and the only thing that has "broken" was the clutch master cyclinder. Cost me $108 from Honda and I put it in in 30 minutes. OTher tha that, just normal replacement parts:
tires, brakes/rotors, oil changes, coolant change, tranny and diff fluid, brake and clutch fluid change, etc.
My Ducati, on the other hand, is more akin to the VW reliability curve...

sounds like hes scaring you away from the car.for a couple grand you can buy 8 transmissions.my baby S has not gave me any problems what so ever.its as reliable as a civic,in my eyes the car is built rather well.buy one in good condition.you wont regret it if you love the car.trust me.
