Newe to Hondas; just bought a 95 Prelude SI with 123k and engine makes a loud clangin
Hello everyone.
I hope someone can help me with this.
I bought the car with the engine making the clanging noise. Previous owner thought it had spun a bearing but, the noise sounds to me like it is coming from the head.
Before I pull the head I thought I woyuld see if anyone on hear has experienced this problem before or has any idea what it could be.
The car is pretty clean with 123k on it and it is a 5 speed. The usual honda rust on the wheel wells above the bumper cover.
The engine is the DOHC H23A1 I believe.
Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.
I have heard the problem could be caused by the valves never being adjusted?????
Thanks
Jim

When the valves need adjustment, it's more of a noticeable ticking noise than anything. Not this "clanging" you're describing. So is it a tick or a clang? haha
id start there though just to rule that out it wont hurt anything....and is it more like a tik or knock?
Mine started making a funny "clanking" noise around 120k and it turned out ot be a spun rod bearing. I think several people on the board have experienced spun main bearings around 120k with stock h23's, especially if the previous owner was not very tedious with oil changes/regular maintenance.
I'm at 142k with my H23 and no rod bearing issues...but I faithfully change the oil. Amsoil!
But anyways, H23's are notorious for this problem. The most difficult aspect here is that you just got the car and don't know the history, namely how it was driven.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies.
It is most definitely a clanking sound, not a tic tic tic!LOL
I am starting to lean more toward the spun rod bearing scenario.
Looks like I have a rebuild scenario in my future.
I paid 500.00 for it so I can afford to sink a little more into it.
I will post here when I tear into it and actually can confirm the source.
Thanks Again.

Good luck with it. At least you can check out all the internals
while your at it and replace or recondition any damaged parts.
