Default warming up time

does it take anyone else an awful long time to get warmed up completely from a cold start?

i usually let it warm up for about 1-2mins and start driving to work. probably about 6-7miles going about 75-80 to get it completely warm.

Cold start to operating temp probably takes around 10 mins on idle for me.

Mine is slow too. At least compared to my CRX, TL, Element and Pilot. Of course the modern cars are meant to warm up fast, but the CRX is quite old.

On cold mornings, I will drive a little out of my way to get the motor warmed up before hitting the freeway. I like to make sure the water temp needle has started to rise before easing it down the on ramp...

that seems long. i can go from cold start to warm on the gauge in about 2 miles of normal driving at 3000rpm.

i would probrably change your thermostat

mine takes a while with the Koyo. but i dont let it warm up before i leave anyway. let it sit for a min. then about 2miles it seems to be up to temp.
think it was like 25mins with it being like 45deg outside before the fans came on with it idling lol.

Takes about 5-7 miles to warm up or about 10 minutes idle for mine. New thermostat as well.

just oem or do you recommend something else?

the previous owner did mention the thermostat might need replacing. is it anything serious?

it can be. the ecu has different fuel/timing maps for warmup. if its not getting fully warmed up for a long time, and your ripping on it, could damage the engine. or as my tuner told me "its solid as long as you dont boost it when its cold or anything not fully warmed up"

use a Honda thermostat... should be a 19301-PAA-306

i would definately recommend a oem thermostat.

i'm running koyo full size rad and spoon thermostat and thermoswitch. when i was getting my car tuned it was never getting to operating temp and therefore not getting into closed loop. i had to swtich back to oem thermostat and thermoswitch.

if it never reaches operating temp it will run rich all the time.

Almost. We sold the Element to buy the Pilot...

BTW: I don't actually own an R. It's just an R swap in a hatch. I would say it does warm up within 2 miles though like others have posted. The other vehicles are easily up to temp within 1 mile...

if it takes that long to warm up especially with 6-7 mile highway driving, there could be an issue with the sensor unit. this sensor delivers the temperature to your speedometer. Buddy of mine had an issue where his temp needle never rose above the c bar even after changing the thermostat, now its fine.

I personally think that anything over 30-seconds of idling is a waste of time and gas to warm up the engine. Even that might be too much on warmer days or if you drive it easily through an alley or similar.

I drive mine at VERY low engine load, no lugging, and no high revs (<3200rpm)... this naturally means I'm doing 20-30mph through local streets.

As for the slow warmup issue, I'd definitely check out the thermostat considering the fact that you're in Southern California and it takes you so long to get up to operating temp.

+1 for an oem replacement, unless you plan on auto crossing or driving hard a majority of the time an aftermarket thermostat will not function properly.

You can drive after starting the car up for a min or two, just don't mash it til it's warm. No reason to sit there for 10 mins if that's what you guys are doing.
