Icon2 What do you guys think of removing the ECU as an anti-theft method?

I WAS JUST LOOKING UP ALL THESE METHODS OF HOW TO MAKE IT SO YOUR CAR ISNT SO THIEF FRIENDLY AND AS EASY TO STEAL. LIKE CAR ALARMS, KILL SWITCH,FUEL CUT OFF SWITCH AND SO ON SO FORTH. WELL FOR THE LONGEST TIME IVE BEEN TAKING OUT MY CAR'S ecu AND IM SURE A THIEF COULDNT STEAL YOUR CAR IF THE DAMN COMPUTER ISNT THERE RIGHT? CALL ME CRAZZY BUT I HAVE AN ALARM AND IVE BEEN TAKING OUT MY ECU FOR AWHILE NOW JUST AS PRECAUTIONS CUZ I KNOW I WOULDNT WANT MY RIDE STOLEN IF IVE PUT BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS INTO IT. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK IF ITS JUST A HASSLE OR AN ACTUAL SECONDARY MEANS OF PROTECTING YOUR RIDE AND INVESTMENTS IN IT??

I use to do that when I left my civic in sketchy places. I dont think its a hassle at all. Where I live there is too many car that get stolen. You have to do whatever it takes to keep your car right.

yeah i am not doubting messed up people and thier methods of stealing cars but tow trucks thats a bit excessive and out right dangerous when my car sits either in my garage or my driveway so if heard them pull up they better know im packing heat and for sure am not letting them take my ride so they can go make a dollar off it. but i agree if its parked somewhere in a bad neighborhood or something of that sort yeah im basically S.O.L.!

more cars get stolen from the nicer neighbor hoods, or shopping centers. it doesn't matter, they want it they will get it sooner or later.

The best anti-theft method is to not own a car.

Okay like if someone is ganna break into a car and have a spare ECU that will match ur engine. But again u can get a wrong ecu and ur car will run like crap u got it their. I would just take out my main Relay and put a boot on the car i got two of them lol.

its true though, serious honda thiefs will have some extra ecus laying around, might not be the right one, but it will most likely let the car start. some good ideas are main relay kill switch, having several hidden alarm sirens, fake switches. but nothings fool proof except walking everywhere.

autolock on the clutch and brake is easier

at least without a tow-truck , a thief seeing 2 auto-loc would probably go elsewhere, unless they had a torch and some time to do it

anyone with a tow-truck though will get it

some low-end thieves bring a p28,etc. with them because they know this a common idea "tuners of JDM eliteness" do

This is the quote from a naive honda driver. ANY Honda ECU will make almost ANY honda run. It'll run like **** but it'll move.

Don't be naive bro, all that leads to is teen pregnancy and stolen Hondas.

Rofl, dude can I make this my sig?

On topic: I believe my old hatch was towed. I had a 2 way pager alarm and autolock on that thing. The more layers of protection will at best slow down the pros. I'd say bear trap beneath the pedals. So when they step on it, BAM!

Something else to think about: A torch isn't always necessary to take out an autolock, some thieves are very capable of getting around them.

Example:

they bent my pedals to take the clutch lock off and i dont know how they got through the rest..
found it a week later stripped
From this thread: https://honda-tech.com/forums/showth...2835233&page=3

Now, the OP of that thread ALSO had clutch and brake locks and it appears the thief either had to stop or he/she saw the locks and decided it wasn't worth it (as AGENT_47 said was most likely). Both people had similar security, yet two completely different outcomes.

The saying "If the thief wants it, they will get it" doesn't really cut it. There are really good thieves, and there are really bad thieves. It all depends on what type of thief sees your car. This is why security, no matter how much it is, is always a good idea. You can keep the amateurs away, and hopefully keep the pros tied up long enough to get them caught.

If I ever get something stolen, i want a good thief. why you ask?

This is the difference between replacing just the head unit or the whole dash...

Haha, yeah your dash would be intact...

but the rest of your car would be stripped and left as a shell on the street somewhere. That is IF they didn't need the shell itself as well.

But seriously I know what you mean. I've had friends who've had their whole center console basically destroyed, and ones where just the head-unit was missing, no cut wiring or anything.
