Default tranny rebuild questions

hi im rebuilding my transmission and have three questions right now. in the first pic there is a snap ring between the cv shaft seal and the differental bearing should this be there. in the second pic you can see where i cleaned a spot the whole trans is covered in it and you can see the where the oil level was is this normal or is it metal shavings and i will need new gears. in the third pic you can see that the reverse gear is all messed up can i just replace this or will the gears on the counter shaft and input shaft need to be changed also. sorry to dump so much in here and thanks for the help

Is it just like a black coating on everything that wipes off with a rag? I've seen that on every transmission I pulled apart, as far as replacing gears you'll have to look at them, if the engagement teeth are worn then they should be replaced, also check the sleeves and syncros, and syncro springs.

Reverse idler gear looks fine, reverse isn't syncronized so a new gear is going to look like that after you use reverse a few times, its also the only gear where you actually shift gears, for all other gears you just move sleeves/sliders.

syncros look ok as far as the teeth and springs go, but whats important is the clearance between the syncro and the gear, the syncros have little pads on the inside to slow down the gears, if the pads are worn down the syncro bottoms out and doesn't slow the gear down. Also some of the pics are really blurry, I can't tell for sure but third looks like the engagement teeth might be worn. Everything really should come apart so you can check the condition of the sleeves. Reverse is pretty chewed up, i've never seen one that bad before, i'd probably replace it. note that its also the 1st/2nd sleeve.

you can take it apart by driving the input shaft against a block of hardwood, remove the nut on the countershaft and do that same for it. You don't need a torch for anything.

This is how I took mine appart. I sourced a syncro and bearing kit from Zumbrota Bearings a few years ago when I rebuilt my trans they had very good prices http://www.zbag.com/. You might have to call them but they did stock complete syncro and bearing kits for honda

'92 - '95 transmissions and '96 - '00 transmissions are completely interchangeable as a unit (automatics are another story) Even most of the internal components are interchangeable.
