Clutch plate might not be grabbing to the gears, maybe some transmission slipping. Try changing the oil since you said it's a little brown.

These 01-05 civics are known for their automatic transmission problems, so don't be too surprised.

My 05 is still running strong at 107,000 though

Yes, it sounds like it's slipping. Have you been getting any check engine lights?

The 01-05 auto trans has defective clutches, they're way to thin and tend to disintegrate and the particles plug up the internal filter. Typically between 30-50k miles your trans will start to slip, slowly worsening until the problem you described occurs. More than likely your out of luck and its time for a trans rebuild, but if you do get it running DO NOT CHANGE THE FLUID! If you change the fluid the greater detergent properties of the new fluid will flush out all the old particles of clutch plates and plug the internal filter for good.

If it's the original transmission, you should consider yourself lucky that it even lasted this long.

You'll likely need to rebuild or replace the transmission. Probable causes include, but are not limited to, ATF pump is worn or binding. ATF strainer is clogged. Mainshaft is worn or damaged. Final gears are worn or damaged. Trans-to-engine error, or the axle has disengaged.

Check the line pressure. If the strainer is clogged, find the damaged components which caused the debris.
Inspect the pinion gears in the differential. If they're worn, replace the differential and the ATF strainer.
Thoroughly clean the transmission, torque converter, ATF cooler and lines.
Take care not to over-torque the main valve body or you might damage the ATF pump and cause it to seize.
Also take care to install the main seal flush with the torque converter housing, because if you push it all the way in it will block the fluid return passage and eventually cause damage.

Good luck with it.

What's the transmission code for the 01-05 transmissions?
Are they a 2 or 3 shaft?
S24?

What code was it throwing? If you replaced the cat and it's still running bad, it's likely the o2 sensor. Have it scanned and post the code(s) here.

Again, scan the code(s) and post them here, otherwise it's a guessing game.

Did it stop working while you were driving it, or after you parked the car and then tried to
drive it again?

Is anything else happening the the gear indicators?
Does the "D" indicator flash at all?

Do a little research on your auto and YOu'll find you got alot more out of yours than most..
Had friend come over with 2 autos to take a look at .. Disasembled and both had the frictions and steels burnt up in them.. = in gear and not moving...Just now starting to re assemble them with Alto frictions and steels
