Default 1997 civic auto transmission clunking

I have a 1997 Civic LX... past week or so when I am driving in overdrive and
slow down it starts clanking like a hammer hitting aluminum. Once it gets
out of that gear its fine. If I drop it to D2 its fine. And when I
accelerate through the gears its fine. I got 230K miles on this sucker. To
tell you the truth I don't think the transmission fluid has have ever been
changed... " I know... thats bad" No codes have come up or anything. Car actually drives really good other than this. I was told by a repair guy who didn't even drive it that it needs to be replaced. Wanted to know what you think?

I would try replacing the tranny fluid first before I just ditch it. Since it shouldve been changed at least twice by now.
