Default 99 Civic LX Keyless Entry Question

So I just bought a 99 Civic LX. I googled around a little and found out that it should have keyless entry even though it didn't come with remotes. I went ahead and purchased a remote for the car and attempted to program it. I was unsuccessful. I then googled around a little more and found out that the keyless entry has something to do with the stock radio. My civic has an aftermarket radio. I'm considering pulling my aftermarket radio this weekend and looking around back there. Is there anything I should look for? Is there a relatively quick and easy fix for this? Thanks for the help.

The keyless system of 96-98 Civics is integrated into the stock radio. For 99-00 Civics, the keyless unit is located behind the driver's kick panel.

So because I'm not able to program the remote I should check to see if the unit is there? I thought all 99's came with it. Did some not come with it?

Yes

It should be there if a previous owner did not remove it.

I will try checking over lunch to see if it's there. If it is there, any ideas what my problem could be?

So the unit is there and I replaced the battery in the remote. I've tried programming it about a dozen times with no luck. Here are the steps I go through:

Get in the car and close the door but leave doors unlocked
Put key in ignition and move it to the I position.
Turn key to II position and press lock
Turn key to I position
Turn key to II position and press lock
Turn key to I position
Turn key to II position and press lock
Turn key to I position
Turn key to II position and press lock, pause while listening for clicking or cycling sound which I never hear and press lock again

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm in to see if this works for you. Are you sure you got the right transmitter?

I also have a 99 civic lx with the K.E.S. control unit under the drivers side kick panel, but no remotes and Honda told me that my car didn't come with K.E.S.(Keyless entry system)

If you buy a remote, you will likely discover that Mr. Honda was wrong.

I just read that you may have to match the fcc I.D.# from the Control unit to the remote.
In my case FCC A269ZUA123.
That may be what the problem is for the OP.

OP,
Does your FCC ID on the control unit match the FCC ID on the remote you bought?

I am betting that is what the problem is for the OP.

If you are saying that a 96-98 remote won't work on a 99-00 Civic, then I would agree.

There is alot of mixed reading about the subject, some say FCC ID doesn't matter, while others are saying it does.

OP,
Try following the instructions Ron posted and post back whether it works or not.

It may also help for the OP to post a front/back picture of the remote.

I bought a 99 LX this summer and was wondering the same thing. I purchased a remote with a zua106 FCC ID and it worked fine for me. Hopefully this helps you out because I had to dig around a lot to find out if it would work. I have an aftermarket radio as well if that helps you. I read that the 99's dont have the security connected to the radio so dont bother pulling that out.
