Default Running carbs with stock Distributor

Ok here we go. Some of you have been asking how I did my Distributor setup for my carbs without an ECU. So here it goes.... FYI, This can be done to any D, B , H , F setup. This just happens to be with a D series engine.

Simple Setup:
You can use a Factory Honda Vac. advance distributor. They are not found on any of the US made Hondas, but the UK and Japan has them all around. This is what it looks like.

Notice how the distributor bolt hole has been cut out for more advance... Also there is no need to use the vac lines in this process. These fit perfect on the 88-91 heads perfect. Not too sure about the others. But I dont see any issues... All you need to do with this setup is connect the coil wires (2) from the Dizzy to the factory coil wires that either go into the ecu or ground and igniton wire. And you are done....

MSD setup:

This next setup is the Optimum setup and the one I currently use and Busu used up until using his AEM ecu this past year.

1. Take your stock Dizzy and gut it... Take out the coil, ignitor, and everything else.EXCEPT for the magnetic pickup..

2. Get your self a Distributor cap with an external coil plug on the end.

3. External coil is needed.

4. Obviously an MSD also.. I chose the Digital6 because of the 2 step.

Once your stock distributor is all gutted, like this:

You need to locate the 2 wires coming from the magnetic pickup. Thats the little square with the copper wire wrapped around it and it has 2 larger wires coming off of it... In this pic it is in the lower left corner.

Now once you have located those wires in the group the come out of the distributor, you can connect them to the "Magnetic pick up" wire from your MSD. These ones on mine are Pink and Grey. I used Male and Female connectors for a reason you will need to know later.. Remember this.

Now all you have to do is connect the external coil to the MSD and you are done. Now remember the trick with the distributor bolt holes from before. You must do that in this process too. You need to get more advance than the stock setup can give.

Once that you have it all complete this is what it should look like...

Looks like stock..

Once that you have it all connected you can start the car. Make sure that you have a Timing Light. You will need it to make sure that you have the Magnetic pickup wires correct. This is why I used the Male and Female connectors. Remember?

Set the distributor in the middle for starters. Once you start the car, the timing should be close to Zero degress. If its around 60-70 degrees, you have the two wires backwards. Just unplug them and switch them around and try it again. Once you have that figured out, set the timing between 32-36 degrees advanced. And now you are done.... You have just done the easiest ignition setup for carbs.. Simple. Either way you choose, its alot cheaper than most other options. Most of you already have an MSD already. You are more than 1/2 way there.

I had this writeup for a few years . But I wanted to let others know just how simple the setup is. Power - money gained is much cheaper than most other N/A setups.

Thanks guys.
