I'm having a lot of problems removing the bitch pin from a b-series tranny. I've tried using a bunch of different sizes of punches and even drilling it out. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

Your tried to drilled it out? Should of used the drill bit to punch it out instead.

 

Well, usually, the punches just go in and spread the clip, which is what you don't want. A 6mm thin-wall socket works pretty good. Since you tried drilling it out, chances are there isn't much you'll be able to do now. But I don't know how bad it is.

If you have access to an air supply, get an air hammer with a pointed insert and go to town.

The shaft will slide out, but it requires disassembling the transmission, IIRC. Haven't pulled that out in a while to remember exactly how it connects.

 

Hit it harder. Now that you've mangled it up with a drill that is the only way left.

Trans has to be split to get the shaft out.

 

I fought mine for a day trying all sorts of punches. Ended up buying an air hammer and had it out in 5 minutes using one of the punches that came with it.

oh yeah op, 7.9 or 8mm punch is the way to go. just keep hitting it. (billy mays key) I THOUGHT MINE WAS STUCK AND I WAS DOOMED, BUT I JUST RAISED MY CAR A BIT MORE AND HAMMERED IT OUT. (end billy mays RIP) took about a total of 3 hrs, 20 min of actual pounding. the other 160min were spent saying "fuuu i wish had a air hammer" or "let me bust out my iphone and google B!tch pin removal" or eating, or walking the dog.

Air chisel with the pointed tip gets them out in literally 1 second. Place tip on bitch pin and apply pressure, pull the trigger and out shoots the bitch pin.

Get a cheap one at harbor freight or something.

I used to beat the hell out of them with a punch till I bought an air chisel for another project and tried it on the bitch pin.

 

i ended up using a alen key and hitting it with a hammer to get mine out .... it took some realy hard wacks i thought i was gonna bend the shaft at first

 

new pin was like 8 bucks i think from dealer

 

you can unhook it from the shifter and pull the linkage out with the transmission. Then it is easier to work with out side of the car. once you get that **** out put a bolt in it so you don't have to deal with it again.

 

^ I agree, unbolt the linkage and remove it with the transmission.


I do not recommend using anything else besides the original spring pin.

 

... 20 pound rail road hammer shoud do the trick ... get a buddy to hold the punch and dont miss lol

 

Or an ac bolt that holds the bracket on. Those have worked the best for me.

Some people use the c-clamp, socket and bit method but I never have any luck with it.

 

air chisel with the punch. works awsome. 2 quick bursts and its out on the floor somewhere.

 

Since ive used a a/c compressor bolt and 5 lb hammer ive never had 1 bitch pin take over 20 seconds to remove. I used to use a lighter hammer and a punch but had horrible trouble. The trick is getting it high enough off the ground with the right size bolt/punch so you have room to swing a heavier hammer. Just dont miss :\

 

AC bolts for the win. I have a few I tack welded old 12mm sockets too just for the bitch pin.

I got the pin out a few days ago and I haven't messed with it much since. I am having difficulties getting the linkage disconnected from the transmission though. I've tried hitting it with a hammer a few times and I'm scared I'm going to do damage to the transmission (it's out of the car by the way). hi While drilling out the pin I didn't do any damage to the shift linkage or transmission, I do need to buy a new pin though lol. I've been spraying PB sray where the pin goes in periodically, hopefully it'll come off soon.

 

you can use one of the two bolts that holds up the shiftlinkage to the body, that's always worked great for me. i'm 120 lbs with not much muscle and i get it out quite easily

 

You can't get the car high enough off the ground to swing a hammer if you're using jack stands. So what I do is just drop the whole shifter.

Maybe I'll get an air hammer next year when I have to pull my GSR trans, but I'm not even sure it will be short enough to work with jack stands.
