Harbor freight has a leakdown tester for $40. You still need an air compressor though. For now, you may consider adding a little oil to the cylinders w/ lower compression to see if there's a measurable increase. If your pressure normalizes across the board, then you're probably looking at a total rebuild due to worn oil or compression rings.
Conversely, oil burning can also be caused by worn valve seals or valve stem seals. Those are considerably faster and cheaper to fix, but from what you say, odds are faulty rings.
