California SMOG rules SUCK!!
1994 honda civic dx failed california smog (which i think 75% of people do lol) just need a little help understanding the work sheet since the smog place is not "allowed" to tell you why it failed but the guy hinted ... he told me it was an easy fix
first i needed to fix the CO(%) portion which he actually did say was the O2 sensor...is this correct? (my car was 0.65 max is 0.55)
then said i needed to fix the HC (PPM) section..can someone please tell me what that stands for and how i would go about fixing that... (my car was 226 max is 92)
then said after those are fixed fix the NO (PPM) again could someone please tell me what that pretains to and a good way to go about it.. (mine was 2862 max is 716)
my readings i failed are all at 15mph i passed the 25mph tests though..
Thank you.

did you warm up the catalytic converter before you took it to the shop? sometimes a cold cat can fail a smog test. get a few hard runs on the highway and let it warm up. other than that, change your O2 sensor.
My 92 civic cx just recently passed smog.
Make sure you dont have an exhaust leak.
Yank your car on the freeway a few times.. Make sure they smog it within 5-15 mins after you get there

you can also run your tank to almost empty, then put a whole gallon of denatured alcohol in the tank(can be found at home depot/lowes in the paint department).. a little trick i learned on some other forums for passing a sniffer test with no cat.
yeah i let it warm up i actually drove the car about 20miles from work straight to the dealership and it was 103 degrees outside as well.

haha trust me if i knew a spot that would now days everyones so cared to i tried to get the guy to do it for $150 extra and he wouldnt.. the guy i use to have do it got busted and had to pay a $10,000 fine..
What is the 02 reading on the test? Going by those numbers your cat is toast because you have been running with the incorrect air/fuel ratio's. Those numbers are what I would expect to see without a cat.
Was there an improvment between the 15 and 25 portion's of the test?
Honda's are one of the easiest to fix. Normally it is just an 02 sensor and cat, as long as everything else is normal.
As mentioned an exhaust leak could be the culprit, either before the 02 sensor or before the cat.
You would think so.... but everyone has to go thru it. Who knows your car might run better after you fix it. So on that note.

yeah there was improvement between my 15 mph test and 25mph test... here are the numbers for both. also i put fuel system cleaner in about 20 miles before i went to get smoged on an empty tank then filled it up just in-case that would make any of these numbers jump that much just an fyi..
15mph (1640rpm)
HC (PPM) Measured/Max allowed 226/92 (failed).... CO (%) Measured/Max allowed 0.65/0.55 (failed).... NO (PPM) Measured/Max allowed 716/2862 (failed)
25mph (1778rpm)
HC (PPM) Measured/Max allowed 129/57 (failed)... CO (%) Measured/Max allowed 0.18/0.38 (Passed)... NO (PPM) Measured/Max allowed 442/764 (Passed)
what the crap? I hear this more and more. SO if you know you car emissions are up the butt, then put some of that and your good? next thing you know california outlaws that stuff just cuz of us honda boys lol
it works though! if you take some of it and burn it, the fumes are almost odorless and the smoke almost non visible at all. it's a clean burning fuel, but it will make your motor knock if you have higher compression so i would only run it for the smog test in b-series vtec motors ,and then go to the gas station right away.
^^ why when he can just buy the thing i said from autozone for like 15 or 10 bucks one of my family member is a smog tech and said he has seen it work alot of time
he could do that too. i'm just posting up what i've done to pass before. 4 smogs, 2 different cars. what is that stuff called at autozone? maybe i'll try it too.
California has the nation's worst air quality in urbanized areas. EPA didn't have the stones to stand up to the automaker lobby, so California legislature did. Be thankful you all breath easier. I wish the whole country had Cali standards. Sorry about trouble with the emissions... I'm no help..
If you advance the distibuter forward it makes you pass one of the sections i forget which one but i did that when i got my ej1 smogged and it passed (just make sure u put it back when your done smogging)
post up a picture of the smog report. black out your vehicle info all i need to see is your readings.
But here is a breakdown of what everything means.
CO-Carbon Monoxide is the by product of burning fossil fuels
CO2-is produced by the CAT during catylization of exhaust gasses (good Stuff
determines combustion effeciency
O2- well we all know what this is but it measures A/F ratio
HC- This is unburned fuel, Oil anything like that if this is high check ignition components for wear and replace as well for leaky fuel injectors. These will fail you no matter what guaranteed..
NOx-Is called Oxides of Nitrogen created by heat of combustion. the hotter the combustion is the highere your nox is.. definatly affected by timing and or clogged injectors. believe it or not adding more fuel lowers nox. cools down the cylinders.
So if you can post up a copy of your report and ill be able to help point out what needs to be done..
