little EF project for fun, I just like saying EF
left, right, left, right, LEFT, RIGHT — Budget EF Track Day Car
Yet another one of those deals that could not be passed up at IPG. We found this 89 Honda Civic Si that would make a perfect Budget Track Day car. The main goal with this car is to prove that it doesn’t take much to go out on a road course and have fun while passing M3’s in a car that cost less than there race tires.
When the car was dropped off at the shop the B16 motor that was in it was apart and had some issue’s so rather than save that motor we decided to part it out to recoup some of the money that was invested in the car. We also just received a B18C1 here at the shop that would make for a perfect swap for the car. Found inside the car was probably one of the nicest interiors we have seen in a long time in an EF. Another nice thing about this car is it has a Autopower Roll bar installed in it already and the car still retains the factory back seats. The outside of this car is not the nicest probably a 7 out of 10, but for what are plans are it doesn’t have to be nice. The suspension on this car is also a very good platform to start with. After getting the car and putting it up on jack stands we realized it had full body coilover setup on it with ST rear sway bar and all the factory bushings have been replaced with polyurethane bushings. The wheels that came on the car are not exactly what we are looking for so we plan to sell those wheels and tires to purchase a set of TR Motorsports C1 wheels.
Now that we started tearing into the car we have pulled out the B16 motor and tranny. After taking the tranny off the motor we also discovered that the seller was honest and it did have a LSD in the tranny. Now that the motor and tranny are out of the car we have decided it is good time to clean the engine bay and new motor that is going into the car. Also at this time we are going to make sure that the wiring harness has everything that is needed for the new motor. After about an hour of cleaning and a borrowed pressure washer we have a nice clean white engine bay and a cleaned up motor.
The next steps for this EF are to take out the Autometer Boost and EGT Gauge that are in the car and keep the oil pressure gauge as well as add a water temperature gauge. Then after that make sure that one of the two clutches we have will fit and bolt the motor and tranny back together and do one more quick final cleaning on them.
Also stay tuned for a DIY Volvo front lip in the works and a few more minor changes to the car to get it track day ready.

they make the cheapest track cars.
my itr caliper front brakes have had the same set of cobalt xp-somethings in them for the last 12 track days, and they only have about 50% burned off. it barely kills tires.
i passed a comptech blown NSX, lots of crazy porshes, vettes, and other shiny pretty things this weekend at autobahn south and full course. only OLD Ra1s an R6s. got the tires for free too.
best track cars ever.

if i didnt wreck my white Si at njmp last year, i'd probably still be racing it. for a track day car, they work pretty good. best ever? definitely not.

nice... although a B18C wouldn't make it "cheap", unless it's a hot motor or blown. can't imagine someone just dumping a good working B18C for less than $1000.
I just built another sedan for less than $2000:
$400 car
$500 koni yellows
$100 15x7 wheels
$400 used RA1s
$500: Bought a B20 swapped crx hatch for $1200, installed the swap into the sedan. Sold the CRX shell for $700.
$100: miscellaneous hoses and such
I'm sure it could be done even cheaper, cause I paid too much for the konis (coulda went used), and the used RA1s could have been cheaper...

a quick update on our little gauge relocation project
http://www.ipgparts.net/blog/project...right-left-ef/
When we acquired Left, Right, Left EF it had been turbocharged in its previous life. It already had 3 Autometer Cobalt Gauges installed in it in a less than desirable location so we performed a quick fix to this be installing them in the empty Radio slot in the center console. In the end we will be running the Autometer Cobalt Oil Pressure as shown and a matching Water Temperature Gauge.
....not to bore anyone that isn't interested...you can check out the full write up here -- http://www.ipgparts.net/blog/project...right-left-ef/

A couple of new parts have trickled in for Project Left, Right, Left EF.
With the brakes in an unknown condition we went ahead and splurged a bit on some brand new parts to ensure we would not have any issues once the car is up and running. The car already has rear disc brakes swapped onto it so we went ahead and got new local auto parts store replacement Blank Rotors, Hawk HP+ Brake Pads for the front and Hawk HPS Rear Brake pads. And upon inspection there is already SuperBlue brake fluid in the lines so we got an extra bottle of that to use when we bleed the brakes and have around for maintenance as needed.
We had 2 used clutches here that could of possibly been used for the project but neither one looks to be in that great of shape so we might as well put a new clutch into the setup instead of realizing an issue with the clutch once the car is back together. The Exedy Stage 1 is a logical choice for the great price it can be had at and slightly increased performance that it offers. The Exedy Stage 1 Clutch kit is a full kit including the Clutch Disc, Pressure Plate, Release Bearing, Throwout Bearing and Alignment tool.

Sometimes you just need a little color in life.
With work continuing on the IPG Track Rat Project: Left, Right, Left EF we figured the engine bay could use a little color to make things exciting.
This B16/B18c Honda DOHC Vtec Valve Cover was stripped to the bare metal and then powder coated this great shade of vibrant Green. It is eye catching for sure.
And with some custom sticker work to the OEM Spark Plug Cover we have a unique valve cover for our powerplant that will draw some attention to the car when the hood is popped.

Who wants a $11 Front Lip?
here is the full write-up as to not clog up this thread too much -- http://www.ipgparts.net/blog/project...-11-front-lip/
but the front lip came from an Early '90s Volvo 940 and can be had for cheap at most local junkyards. It suprisingly fits the front contours of an EF civic very nicely and will most likely work well on other models as well.
