never spin the engine backwards always towards the fron of the car...amd there should be a mark like on the pic on the head to line up the camgear...on d16z6 u might need the cover...to have it 100% right..

look on the timing cover and theres should be a mark, rotate crank pulley till you see the 4 marks or slips on it. then line up the one slip thats away from the other 3 to the mark on the cover

do the cam sprocket like the pic

i did my freinds head gasket/timign belt in about 2 hours lol

yeah when i realized those 2 lines were not quite horizontal i realized where my cam gear should have been which looks kinda like the z1 pic. also yeaah i was doing the bottom crank the way u said. my problem also was my keyway was kinda loose so i actually used the mark on water pump and lined that up to the crankshaft gear it had a small groove in one of the teeth. i actually ignored the 0 degree mark on my crank. but seems to be running fine now. have to connect the exaust now. i will post pics onto my mini me build thread tomorow. sounds kinda monstarr hehe

yeah i wouldn't line the water pump to anything has nothing to do with timing

go off the crank and cam gear its not rocket science it takes like 10 seconds to do it.

if its a stock motor it should sound nothing like a monster.

there is a mark on the block that lines to the crank gear maybe it wasnt on the water pump, i think its the oil pump body...my bad but there is a mark. not exactly stock its a frankenstein motor and that was with no exaust hooked up

if you moved the crank pulley or cams while installing the belt you probably threw the engine off the right position...need to ensure you have TDC for #1 piston and cams line up as well as crank...
