You'd be surprised. All of the fab guys I know personally started out apprenticing. That usually involves a lot of bitch work like sharpening drill bits. If you get the angle wrong you just start over, I really dont see a way to destroy a drill bit except for maybe WAY overheating it.
Personally I can never get the angle just right, but I have never really sat down and practiced either. Ive used the DD before, and it works but its time consuming and cumbersome to use when compared to a bench grinder
i have used a drill doctor before. i just don't like the angles it puts on a drill.
as for ruining a drill on the bench grinder... that is pretty much impossible if you have half an idea what you're doing. if you make a mistake, you just sharpen a little more. pretty simple really. there isn't a whole lot to sharpening a drill. just make sure your edges are the same length and that everything behind it is relief. that's pretty much it. if it is a larger drill, clear out the web a bit. this stuff isn't rocket science. maybe i'll have to do a video or a writeup.

That would be awesome, I guess I could just google it and figure out what Im doing wrong....nah that would be too easy

The first video posted isnt that great. Hes just putting the drill againist the wheel. Your suppose to move the drill up and down like the second video. If there uneven you can make the whole larger than needed. Start with larger drills as it is easier.
i have my own drill doctor that works very well. our shop has one that we named the drill annihilator. for obvious reason. for some reason the annihilator, kills bits. so we just get new. we go through alot of bits.
when i was an engineer i used to sharpen bits here and there in the tool room.
it was a machine the size of a kitchen oven with a huge grinding disk the size of a vinyl record. it could do split point, s point, and some other points. it was hard as hell to use. took like 10 min to do each drill bit. ive never seen something like it for sale.
