Icon2 THE TRUE DEFINITION BETWEEN A 4 PUCK AND A 6 PUCK

Hello to all members let me first start off please if you have not experience in clutches dont respond, this thread is not for i "i heard this" members please. only respond if you have personally dealt with these clutches.

just want to know the true def and the advantages to one then the other. im in the process of buying a new st5 clutch it seem its a fire sale on clutches especially cc clutches. and honestly dont know the diff between 4 puck and 6 puck clutches, now if im incorrect please correct me.

a 4 puck grabs more harder which in return allows you to switch gears faster, and more suitable more high hp cars my power goals close to 650whp.
a 6 puck is more suitable for the street but holds almost the same power as a 4 puck. im getting confused writing this please help

A four puck does not let you change gears faster. Technically a lighter clutch disc ( less inertia) is easier on synchros. The difference between four and six can be hard to tell they both will chatter and require some finesse.

If your power goals are 650 then you might get away with a cc stage 5 with upgraded pressure plate. Thats a 4 puck

^^^ Ditto. Stage 5 should work. We've had some Comp Clutch Stage 4s (6-puck) make it to 600-650 whp. But def not good for more than that. lol Best to pick up a twin disk of some sort to ensure longevity of the clutch. Big investment, but it will last longer than the other options at that power level.

Honestly, I never understood the purpose of the 4-puck other than weight savings. Given the same pressure plate, I can't see it holding more torque than a 6-puck. There is less surface area, which means less potential grip and less heat dissipation.

Only time I've recommended 4 puck over 6 is for real high RPM setups where the weight savings allow you to shift at the same speed without grinding. That's usually not a problem for most though.

The differences are what we listed. Provided the pressure plate and clutch disk combinations work to hold your power, they will both perform similarly, with the 4-puck carrying less inertia when the clutch pedal is depressed. But you are pushing the limits of both styles of clutches that are available for our cars. The next step is a twin disk, which will hold that power and do it more efficiently.

4 puck is lighter, that's all.

I prefer ACT 4 puck, SPRUNG

If your a rook don't get a unsprung clutch ull murder your tranny

I know this is an *old* thread but came up first in Google.

let me clear up some misinformation. Fewer pucks have can have more "holding" pressure.

say your pressure plate exerts 1800lbs of force, the more surface area, the less psi per square inch

a 4 puck will have more psi per square inch than a 6 puck same with a 6 puck vs full face. This allows the designers to use materials that require more psi^2in for clamping

I'm pondering this and wondering (also in reverse) why then, Brembo and others don't make the disc pads SMALLER, instead of the big beautiful half circles...the heat dissipation factor makes sense
But then its the puck MATERIAL, of course. Most all high-perf. offerings are never full face, so more isn't always better.. damn.
I think I'm gonna go six puck again, was almost getting a 4.
I noticed Comp. doesn't even show 4 pucks on their page anymore, but they are available from online sellers.

I have to replace the rear main seal in my setup and might as well upgrade the existing (3yr old) ACT HD/SS clutch. Debating between ACT 6 puck, 4 spring or Competition Clutch 6 puck, 6 spring.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS...

Daily drove a Comp Clutch 6 puck "stage 4" for awhile, it wasn't too bad, the engagement was just really sharp/sudden.

I prefer to use a full face clutch with a heavier pressure plate when possible, but past a certain torque you're forced into puck clutches or dual disk.

I have no slippage at the moment. However, I don't want to take chances and have regrets of not replacing/upgrading while I have the transmission off.

Either clutch you mentioned would perform well, I've had good experiences with both ACT and Comp. Once you get used to the engagement driving a 6 puck on the street isn't bad at all.

I've always used ACT clutches and have never deal with any issues. Would the lesser spring (on ACT) be of any differences compared to the CC which has 6 ???

I only use Action Clutch. Their springs are fully enclosed so no change of pop outs. You want the lightest pressure plate possible while being capable of holding the power you're making with the tires you're running. The heavier the pressure plate the harder it is on the thrust bearings.
