Default Auto Transmission Adjustment Lesson

My tranny went out about 6 months ago. I bought a used one from a local place, the ones imported from Japan with supposed low miles on them. I dont know much about tranny installs compared to other jobs so I had it delivered to a mechanic shop to install. From the time I got the car back, it shifted hard. It was late on the upshift, and then clunked hard on the downshift. I was dumb and immediately thought it was a bum tranny since it was used and pretty old at this point. I drove it hoping it would wear in.

Well, coming up on my 6 month warranty expiration, I decided to use the warranty and get another one put in. But first I decided to check out a few things out. I adjusted the throttle control cable on the tranny and wow! the damn thing was seriously off! Once I adjusted it correctly, the tranny shifts like butter, problem solved.

I wont be using that mechanic again. The throttle control cable was so off that either he doesn't care or doesn't have a clue how to do it correctly.

Here is the guide for inspecting/adjusting the throttle control cable.
