To be honest if you have to ask you might not want to paint it. On the other hand you gotta start some where. the stuff you need would depend on the condition of the car and the type of paint you are using. if your going to prime and block sand or just sand and seal it. If i wur you i would just prep the car by taking off the moldings and sand down the car and take it to maaco. They will paint your whole car for 300 bucks which is less than what it would cost you to buy all the stuff needed to paint your car which would be around 600 bucks more if you need to buy a paint gun, water/oil filters, da sander, long block sander, tack clothes, etc.
will he be fixing any damage? is there chipping paint? factors like these will effect how much material you need. if the paint is decent on it, and you are just doing a sand and spray, then you will likely need some 800 grit and a DA, just scuff the paint and then use a gray scotch brite pad in any hard to get areas.
An alternative is a product called "Scuff Stuff", its a chemical prep solvent used in conjunction with a gray scuff pad. Just wet the pad, dip a little of the scuff stuff on the pad and just scuff away.
Also before any scuffing or sanding, wash the panel you are about to work down with a wax and grease remover, and before that even wash with soap and a hose to get any dirt or road grime off, one little piece of dirt could mean disaster if it gets caught in a spinning DA.
If you are at a lack of an air compressor for prep, go with the Scuff Stuff, dont think its too expensive and one bucket will be MORE than you need to prep a civic.
Once the car is prepped, you will need your paint and catalysts, mixing cups, stirring sticks, strainers, TACK CLOTHS. Everyone overlooks those, once you blow the car off, and wax and grease remove it, GENTLY drag the tack cloth over it. If you press down too hard on the rag you could transfer some of the chemicals off the rag on to the panel and that would be counter productive to keeping the panel grease free, and fisheyes SUCK! The cloth's purpose is to gently lift any small dust particles that may stick to the panel because there will be a static charge on it so anything floating around may stick to it.
If you can get your hands on one, get a grounding kit for the car, itll remove any static charge on the surface of the vehicle, not necessary if you cant find one, but if your buddy has one, just makes life easier.
So just to save time of reading and checking off things.
-Roll of 800 grit sandpaper or tub of "Scuff Stuff" and gray scotch brite pads
-Wax and grease remover
-Clean shop towels(blue ones from advanced are fine)
-Mixing cups
-Strainers
-Stirrers
-Paint/reducer/hardener(depends on which brand you go with)
-Clear/hardener(unless you go single stage)
-Tack cloths
-Tape and masking paper(obviously)
