where is the vss located?
i recently got a cel for a bad vss signal. also at the same time my speedo gauge stoped working.
i am assuming that its just the vss. where is this item located?
what is the fix for this?
update:
as an update, with the help from these guys i found out very quickly that it was the speedo cable. it was broken in half.

You can try to unplug it from the back of your cluster and clean the connection, reset your ecu and see if it fixed it.
Or have the car in neutral and push the cable down into your vss while rocking the car back and forth to make sure it's in all the way.
It's on the back of your transmission. Follow your speedo cable from the firewall and you'll find it

on the tranny the line simply goes into the tube. i dont know if anything can actually be removed.
i will definitely try to push the line in while in neutral first.
so the vss is not in the cluster?
how do i test to see if the cable is broken?
its a 91 civic si.
Yes the vss is in the cluster. If your speedometer has stopped working, more than likely your speedometer cable is broke. When you take out the cable from the tranny, you can pull of the cable and see if there is any play in it, i.e. able to pull and push it back in. That is your indication that it is broken. If you noticed that your speedometer would fluctuate at a given speed, say 30-40 mph, and then all of a sudden show the correct mph, that is an indication that your speedometer cable was going bad. You can get a replacement from the dealer for like $40.

does anyone know if a 91 crx si cable will work on 91 civic wagon si cluster 4wd?

I ordered one from my dealership for an 88 sedan like a month ago. You may want to check out majestic though. This same dealership told me i couldn't order the ignition switch as one piece that i had to get a whole lock/key cylinder setup. Soooo dont always trust one honda dealership in your area. I'd call around or order one from majestic. Actually google was way faster and cheaper

actually majestic also says its discountinued. i looked for a crx si and the number is different. it has the same picture but its a generic picture.
i dont know what the difference is.
here is the link to majestic for the crx and the wagon civic

if you look for #4 on both, one will be available and the other isnt.
also i noticed that #1 which is the inner replacement part for the cable, have different part numbers. suggesting they are different, but i dont know what is the difference.

similar issue, my 95 accord ex, the odometer, then the speedometer stopped working. They both will kick back in and work perfect every now and then, but not often. Now, just last week, i uninstalled my amp(baby on the way) and they seem to work more often...buut, they kick out when i turn on the lights? wierd?...could it just be a bad ground?
The #1 & #4 come together, I'm looking up on http://estore.honda.com as now, they still have the cable available for 91 civic si part #78410-SH3-A02 $27.56, the same with the 91 CRX si. I just replaced mine while ago.

im mostly concerned if the length is the same. my 91 civic 4wd wagon has a different part number as to any other civic that year. the hatch, crx, si versions have all the same part number.
you can get a cel from not having vss. also i did an obd1 conversion so that will definitley not work right cause i have vtec now too. the ecu uses that signal to determine a few things.
