Default ABS not working - no light - suggestions?

Bought this car about a month ago, the other day I did an emergency lock up in a panic to avoid smashing into the back of this jacked up truck that pulled out in front of me.
(missed it by about a half inch from sliding in the rain)

This is when I first realized my ABS was inactive, next i turned the key when i went to start the car and no ABS light went on at all.
So then I checked the under dash fuse box and the fuse was present and in good condition.

Any suggestions on the next steps to take.

Additional information:
The engine was swapped with a JDM H22A in 2008 by a mechanic shop by the previous owner and it is unknown whether the ABS was working before this swap took place.

Thanks guys!
love this car.

I also welcome debates on why I should just leave the ABS off and learn how to threshold brake properly and not panic like a little girl.

The bulb has been removed since you say it didnt turn on when you turned the key. Get a new bulb in there and get the code for your ABS problem.

Very, very, very few people can out brake an ABS system these days. In fact I will argue that no one can out brake a modern abs system. Why learn to threshold brake when there are safe guards far superior to you already built into the car. Fix the damn ABS already. The only place thresh hold braking is neccesary is at the track where abs sytems are banned (In most santcioning bodies) beacuse its considered a forum of cheating.
