Default B16A Sputtering Problem

Obd0 B16a in my ef hatch. Gradually over time it has gotten worse until it is absolutely unbearable. Accelerating it is incredible noisy and sputters like crazy. If I floor it its fine but seems to have much less power. I have replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor and cap, finally an entirely new dizzy, switched the o2 sensors. I have had zero success. It throws no ecu codes at all and when I unplug the map it throws it. I am really thinking fuel. Either the fuel pump is shot or the injectors are clogged. Thoughts? Its 20 years old so I know **** goes wrong. OH and upon inspecting the spark plugs two were perfect and two were black as hell. Please help me.

Try taking off your injectors and see if the little plastic filter in the top of them is straight. I had a similar problem in my obd0 b16a.

Yeah the filters are all straight and clean. I even swapped out the injectors and no luck. It did change it a little but its just a different kind of sucking lol. I filled the tank and that really seemed to help. Thoughts?

Possibly the fuel pump sock? If your tank was low as hell then sediment might have gotten sucked up onto the sock and then when you filled the tank it could have washed some away. I'd change that and see if that fixes it. Plus its not that hard and pretty cheap too.

Why would the headgasket cause this? Its not overheating. I see how it could cause there to be a loss in combustion pressure possibly and cause misfire... hmm... Please explain why you think so. The big thing is I have replaced wires, plugs, the entire dizzy, fuel filter and injectors with no luck. I have sputtering and two of my plugs were black. And its not throwing any code and never has.

I think the major things that can help diagnose my problem are that it sputters very bad at CONSTANT rpm, black smoke is coming out the exhaust, and the #2 and #4 plugs were black as all get out while #1 and #3 were fine.

ok i just fixed my car it was doing the same.....run your motor disconnect each injector one by one if u feel a change in the motor that one is good if u dont its bad..im guessing your bad ones are 2and 4 so switch those injectors with 1 and 3 and if those cylinders (while disconnecting them) dont drop in rpms theres your problem the injectors

oh s***t never mind i just read u changed the injectors i would say do a compression test check your valves for slash and go from there......see but if your car is throwing black smoke that means its to rich so u might me loosing compression or vacum leak or intake is clogged

Ill have to do a compression test. If thats bad then it will likely be a bad headgasket or valves not sealing... Im still going to try swapping some injectors and stuff. I know I converted from Dual point to Multi but maybe I did that wrong. See a fuel pump doesnt make sense cause only two cylinders are misfiring and they are 2 and 4. So fuel pressure wouldnt really make sense... Maybe I converted to MPFI incorrectly. Whoever had the idea to pull each injector wire is thinking...Im gonna try that and swap them around. Thanks for helping guys Ill let you know how all this goes.

I changed the fuel filter already...nothing man haha. Im gonna play around with the injectors and do a compression check I think that will really narrow it down. I dont want to replace the HG unless I am fairly sure that is what it is cause its a total PITA. I really think injectors and HG would be two things that would go bad over time. And Im thinking injectors over HG cause its not leaking or overheating...

And I really doubt its timing cause it has gotten worse over time it didnt just one day go bad and it was good when it was swapped. I dont think it jumped a tooth or anything.

Do a complete tune up and see what happens. Change out your plugs they could be fouled, change your wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter ect.

obd0 pr3 ecu has 2 oxygen sensors. c16 oxygen sensor num 1 controls fuel distribution for cyls 2 and 4 and c8 oxygen sensor num 2 controls fuel for cyl. 1 and 3. Make sure you ahve 2 seperate oxygen sensors and there both hooked up to correct locations at the ecu. You can't run 1 oxy sensor and split it to both locations at the ecu.
