Gonna drop a motor in need to be sure of a few things
So my motor and trans are goin out and imma drop in another D for my coupe
im thinkin of goin with just a d16y8 motor cuz im not really lookin for something over the top just keepin it simple. i know the motor is a straight drop and all i have to worry about is wiring up vtec but as far as anything else is concerned, am i gonna need some other things like the matching ECU? lemme know so i can put together a list it would really help since this is gonna be my first swap

to swap in an obd2 motor into a obd1 chassis is just a switch of the ECU, wire in the vtec, use a obd1 dizzy, same harness.. and thats about it i think

i'd advise not go to with an obd2 motor.. its a difficult process to get that bitch working properly.. an obd1 d15b motor is highly better performance-wise than a d16y8
just use what ever u have obd2 motors are no harder to swap then a obd1 motor all u do is use a obd1 dizzy and get a chipped p28 and run a stock y8 map. all the sensors are the same u may acually have a few extras as the obd2 motors have other sensor obd1 did not have.. goodluck
To avoid chipping or flashing the p28, use a OBD1 fuel rail. The stock b7 will do, but a z6 would be ideal and the car will run smoother since the z6 and y8 are almost 100% identical. While where on the z6 stuff, get a complete z6 intake manifold it will have the MAP sensor, the 2 wire IACV and the proper fuel rail and injectors (IIRC, its just the plug wiring difference, but if you get the whole manifold, it'll ne a non issue).
There is a debate on which intake manifold is better y8 vs z6... From what I have read/seen the y8 is better for boost since the plenum is bigger and holds more air volume, whereas the z6 has longer runner to distribute the air quicker.
Aside from the p28 and z6(OBD1) intake manifold you will need yo reuse your OBD1 distributor and alternator (wiring reasons). The y8 will have a knock sensor on the rear center of the block but just make sure its on tight and ignore it. The p28 doesn't have a pickup for the knock sensor. You will need to wire up Vtec and (I think) the oil pressure sensor.
Also, make sure to pop on a new head gasket (depending on miles), timming belt, idler pulley, & water pump while your at it. Check for valve lash and adjust as needed. make sure all seals are good and no oil leaks. It'll be best to fix all that stuff while the motor is out than finding out he hard way once its in.

you will need to reuse your injectors, dist, alternator, mounts, engine harness, driverside mount bracket if you are going to drop in an obd2 motor. you will also need obd1 p28 and run vtec wires.
Also be sure that the p28 is an a05 and not an a52, an a52 is for an automatic and your vtec will not work unless you have the p28-a05 which is the manual trans ecu. Ran into that problem with my z6 swap when I bought my hatch lol...
aight so far the info im gettin is good, imma start puttin together a list and hopefully get to work on it soon or at before the month is up since i need the car runnin for school thanks for your guys' input
Did you buy the motor yet? Why not just get a D16z6, it's a better overall engine, plus you are better off down the road if you ever decide to go turbo, plus with the P28 ecu and if you get the wire harness with it, it's plug and play, no jumper harnesses from OBD2-OBD1 vice versa
Btw, since no one has mentioned it yet, If you run a stock P28 on a Y8 the timing is going to be off and its not going to run right. It has to be chipped and tuned. At which point you might as well run a Z6 with its far superior crankshaft.
ok, why a z6 motor? If possible, buy a JDM D15B.. more power, even though it has a .1 less displacement, and its a plug and play.. you might be running a little rich with the stock ECU, but its not gonna kill your engine life. a D15 in Vegas runs $700.. but than tack on like $50-$100 for the timing belt kit.. and bam, 130hp and 40+mpg.
Buying a d16z6 or a d16y8 is your last choice, well the y8 is.. if you cant get a d15, get a z6 since there both plug and play, just need a p28 ecu and thats it.
and the reason i said an obd2 JDM d15b is harder to swap in is cuz you have to do a TON of things [electrically/wiring] to make it perform the way it was intended to.. any1 can swap in a d16y8, but why bother wiring things up or gutting your dizzy, when a z6 is cheaper to install

Get a Z6
to bad your not doing this in Jan 2011
I'm selling my d16z6 then with only (as of now) 73k miles ,it's my DD so it will be higher by then
no leaks, no oil burning, compression is solid

the d16z6 has a better crank then the d15 vtec. 2 oil ports to the rods vs one you tell me whos the winner and who spins a rod first
ok guys so what im gettin at is either an ob2 JDM D15 or a Z6
ill try to find one of the two and if i can score a deal on either ill pick it up
thanks for the input, anymore info on the two motors would help out a lot
