Default Exedy Twin Idle Problems

Hello, I put an Exedy twin clutch with a really lightweight flywheel that comes with it on my b16.

Now when I push in the clutch the car will stall. I expected this to happen, but the problem is, adjusting the idle up with the adjustment screw will not correct it. The computer just brings the idle back down.

I can correct the problem by upping the idle with the throttle plate screw, although this is not recomended to be messed with by your average retard trying to fix surging and idle problems.

Now here is my question......

Does the tps learn a set value on startup like I have seen on other cars. For example if you hold the throttle slightly open on startup does that become the new learned closed position by the computer??? Or does it not compensate? If it doesn't I got the FIX.

That's not how it works with the Honda ECU.... Your TPS is a pre calibrated value and doesn't deviate from startup to startup.

Are you pushing in the clutch so much that you could be hitting your thrust bearing and stalling the engine? Does it do this no matter how much you press the clutch pedal?

You might need a clutch stop.

Yes I just put the motor together. Uhh Oh
Ive had it back apart twice and havent noticed anything.

One weird thing I have going on also is it sounds just like the throwout bearing is bad.

But I pulled the trans and replaced it and its the same sound.
So is that a clue of a thrust bearing problem? What is the fix?

Hmm I just thought the idle thing was a common lightweight flywheel problem. Im glad I made this post.

If I pull it out of gear without depressing the clutch it does not stall

No I dont. Should I?

Let me go in to a little more detail on the problem. If I just start it up and idle it its fine. I can push the clutch in and release it and it wont stall the rpms dont even vary.

The only time it stalls is when I take it out and drive it. Like when coming to a stop at a stoplight. Slow down push in clutch and it dies.

The rattle sound when pushing the clutch in sounds like the shift fork is rattling. I thought it had something to do with the hasport hydro to cable conversion kit im using.

I would think if it was a thrust bearing issue It would stall at an idle when I push the clutch.

i have never seen an exedy need a clutch stop. i have had mine in there since 06 with no clutch stop.

thats the reason i went with the exedy because it wasnt needed.

the rattle noise is normal for a twin disc, every car with an exedy makes the same sound, sounds like change in the bell housing.

Very good. I adjusted the clutch cable perfect and I know it is not overextending the clutch. It does the same whether I push it to the floor or just enough to release it.

Now that I think about it... it is the design of the clutch making the noise isnt it. The plates in between the clutch discs are basically floating on the slides and I could see them rattling when released. Well thats good to know its normal.

Thank you for that. I Can keep it from stalling by lightly pressing on the gas when coming to a stop and releasing the clutch. So Im going to give it a go on adjusting the throttle screw open a bit and be done.

What software are you using to tune? There are settings in most to adjust for what you are talking about....

When adjusting the idle screw you need to jump the OBD port with a paperclip or a wire so the computer does not turn it back down, just as when you change timing.

It sounds to me like you are having an issue with your idle. Noyhing to do with your clutch.

Sounds like you need to call your tuner.

Yeah, just need to adjust the IAC settings at a bit. If you have Hondata, click the IAC duty cycle slider to the right a few times and it'll catch it better on decel.
