First bike?
I'd say no bike is forgiving... I'd also say that a 600cc would have better brakes (large dual disks vs single disk), fatter tires (more surface for grip and tilt) and alot of bigger bikes even come with ABS, such as the ER6N (Ninja 650R)..
But I'm the advocate for bigger bikes even for beginners..

Check out the yamaha FZ6R its a really good beginner bike but its still and inline 4 so its still got some ***** when needed. I just picked one up, i downgraded from my gsxr750 for comfort during my 160mile daily trip to work. Very easy to ride adjustable bars, adjustable seat height and decent power.

I see what your trying to say but I have to disagree. Its almost like saying a Ferrari or sports car would be a idea car for a beginner driver because they can stop on a dime, corner as if their on rails, traction control, abs. ect.
imo a smaller cc bike would fit a beginner better.
I have a 09 Ninja 250R for a beginner bike. People say I'll out grow it fast. I'm in no hurry to get to a bigger bike and rather take my time to learn the in's and out's of riding. The best thing to do is take a MSF course, like I did and go from there. Ride their 250's and then you decide what you would feel comfortable on.
wow I guess I was lucky sv was my first bike for the street.. Honestly get a 600 have you not rode dirtbikes your whole life.. tell me you didn't just watch biker boys now you need a rocket?
i beg to differ. SV650's are not easy to ride slow around stall speed, and if your on the shorter side they are a bit tall. Ride the gs500 for a season and you should be able to sell it for not that much of a loss.
The Ninjette will do 100 mph -- it is more than capable of taking you anywhere. "Grow out of" is code for "Not crazy fast enough." If a motorcycle does the tasks you ask of it any "growing out" is simply wanting more speed for the sake of picking up tickets. If you want to do 160 mph on the freeway then you will "out grow" anything less than a four cylinder race bike. If you want reliable transportation either the Ninja 205R or the GS500F will keep you happy for many years. They are close to the same size, 'cept for the engines; not to mention that the Ninja is 65 pounds lighter (more agile, more 'flickable') *AND* -->> $1,900 <<-- cheaper MSRP.
I used to think 600's were ok to start on (I started on one), as long as you respected the bike. But when my buddy bought a new 250, and I had to ride it home for him, I knew instantly that a 250 is the best starter bike, imo. Nothing about that bike is scary.
