Default 2001 Accord Engine Swap

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum, I am sure this question has been asked before but I cant find the right answer. I have a 2001 Accord Coupe 5MT with a 4cycl f23a1 engine vtec. My car has 210kms on it. Its burning alot of oil regardless of what I have tried. I am looking to replace the engine. There are 3 options I am thinking of and I need to know which I can do within the reasonable cost.

1. Get the same replacement engine (F23a) for about $500.

2. I have also heard of the stronger F20B engine but I am wondering if I would have to change my transmission as well with that and if engine mounts are needed. Used engines I have found for about $600

3. My third option is possibly putting in the v6 version J30A DOHC VTEC for about $600. Would my transmission need to be changed? and any difference in mounts?
Thanks any information would be appreciated, my main concerns are transmissions of the other 2 engines.

1. If you don't have time and want just a straight drop in, go for that opinion.

2. If you do have time and want a little bit of power to your car, you can do a straight drop in with the F20B and use the same transmission.

3. You would have to consider alot of custom parts or have a doner V6 Accord. The V6 does have 4 less inches to work with compared to the V6. No your F23A1 transmission will not mate with the J30A transmission. If you do decide to go with this route, get the 6 Speed CL-S or TL-S transmission that came with LSD.

Well..

Option # 3 sounds really good on the paper. There are tons of wiring issues, spedo, reverse lock, etc, etc, that need to be dealt with. Plus getting a 6 speed out of TL-S would not be cheap either. I have J30A out of 1998-2002 Accord is Single Overhead Cam and also look for 6 speed swap. I knew people pay close to $1500 for the tranny alone. Complete engine, tranny, ECU and wiring, maybe axle from 2003 TL/ClS V6 6 speed would cost me around $2500 not including days(maybe weeks) of labor and headache if I do DIY.

Personnally, I'd go with option # 2. F20B has a litte more power, but not as big and complicated as J series swap. You might be able to extract more power (10-15 hp) using high performance camshaft, header, exhaust, and air intake. A solid F20B on a good chassis and suspension should still be alot of fun crusing down the freeway or canyon runs.

+1. Just search write-ups for h22 swaps and everything's pretty much the same

ive been searching a lot and cant get a straight answer on a few things I know it will bolt in and everything will plug up right i can also use my f23 tranny and even h22 axles but this may sound stupid if I get a chip p28 and a obd2b to 1 jumper will it run it without doing anything to the distributor? also worried about it not reading the second 02 sensor and knock sensor so can I just delete them? or is there another ecu that would work besides the f20bs pcb ecu cause the ones im lucky enough to find are pretty expensive

plenty of people get chipped & tuned p28's for their f20b or H series swaps. I think you might need to do some wiring to the dizzy depending on where the crank angle sensor is located, but let's see if somebody else will correct me on that if I'm wrong. Also, I don't see why you can't use an OBD1 p13, since it's basically a destroked h22 and still redlines at the same area. I'm using a p13 with my h23a (basically an h22 with a longer stroke and lower compression pistons) and it works fine. Could be better with a tune of course, but still enjoyable.

rywire might make a distributor conversion harness kit or some sort try looking there..you will most definitely need an obd1 distributor tho with it

Can you use the same motor mounts of the f23a on the f20b? I have a 2002 with the f23a . Can I still put that in my 2002 even though the motor only went to 2001 . I ask that because if spend the money and do it can I still get it inspected with no issue?
