Default Leaking forks

Hey everyone, haven't really been in this forum in quite some time. Some of you might remember, back in 2005 I was in a pretty bad accident where a truck turned left in front of me and I slammed head first into it, miraculously not ending up paralyzed or dead, but sustaining some other pretty serious injuries.

5 years later and I'm back on a bike. I wrecked (ugh..) my amazing supercharged E46 M3 in December and deployed to Haiti in January and while I was gone, I traded some parts off my car for a 2006 GSXR 1000. So that's where I stand now.

I've had it registered, insured, and riding it for about a week now. I'm not a BIG fan of it aesthetically, but it doesn't bother me too much. There are a few things that need to be done; rear brakes replaced, need the clutch adjusted, etc.

But after going on a ride yesterday, I noticed fluid all over the front brakes, forks, and some on some dripped on the wheels. Looks like the fork seals I'm assuming. I don't have the tools, patience, or knowledge to do this myself .. how much am I looking to have both done at a shop, with them taking the forks off?

A lot of extra info in here for such a simple answer, but I wanted to reintroduce myself back in here!

Cheers!

Pics of the bike and again, I'm not a big fan of it aesthetically, but it's growing on me a little and it's my primary means of transportation, so it works for me! All the decals are under clear as well, so they can't be pulled off.

Called two places in two .. one only works on Harleys now and the other was a Suzuki dealership. The dealership quoted 4 hours labor at $220, with parts adding up to $73 (2x fork seals and 2x dust covers, not including oil).

I'm trying to find an indy shop to see if I can't get that down, but curious to see what other people out there have been quoted or paid to have it done .. and again, doing it myself isn't an option.

aesthetically the bike is actually pretty nice, you just need to get rid of that chrome. as for what the shop quoted, i've always been a stickler for doing things the right way.......its a suzuki dealer, not only will you have the work done by someone trained, you'll get a warranty with it too. $300 is cake dude when it comes to forks, my advice is to spend the little extra for the peace of mind.

I agree on the chrome. I HATE chrome, but i think it actually works with the white .. but even still, I will be replacing everything that is chrome with black .. and the mirrors are USELESS. I guess they're supposed to be "low profile" in the fact that they don't stick out much, but you can't see **** with them.

I agree with getting things done correctly, but I think there are many good independent shops out there that are just as good, if not better, than the dealership and many times it can be done for less than what the dealership charges. If there are any of those around me, however, I've yet to find out. What kind of warranty do they offer on something like fork seals? It seems like something hard to warranty with it being such a common problem on the GSXR, unless they just warranty their work that it's done correctly .. if that's the case and my forks give out hitting a bump at 80mph on the freeway, well, I'm toast anyways

Thanks for the response, I'm still weighing all my options!

to much Bling dude... your not getting your Parabola!

250$-300$ sounds about right, i think at most you'd be looking to save about 50$ by doing more leg work. main thing is to get it done correctly. you might as well go for the whole enchilada and get superbike internals and custom valving.

haha I knew I'd get some **** from you!

I'll keep looking around and see what my options are. Something like PPS Racing, however, it a bit overkill for me. I don't plan on doing much with this bike other than some joyriding and getting me from point A to point B until I get back home.

a waste of money if he's not racing

all dealerships warranty any work they do, if your seals start to leak again within the time specified by the dealership then you can take it back and they'll fix it for free.

I try and not judge or make a decision for someone else on whether or not something is acceptable or wasteful based in my own personal financial situation. We're all adults, and can make our own decisions.

that being said, it's NOT a waste if you want your bike to handle as good as it is supposed to. there is a big difference in handling quality for anyone riding at almost any level except very at a very basic level if they are riding turns.

if you are just joy riding and cruising then yes... you might want to save the cashish.
