Default D series build

so i have decided to start building my d sseries engine. it is a zc with a y7 head has y8 intake manifold. but the first thing i plan doing is doing a head swap and going v-tec. Please dont respond with theres tons of threads on this because i couldnt find one that helped me with exactly what i needed. I need to know exactly what parts i need. with hopefully an estimated price on what they cost i dont want to spend more then $1000. and im shooting for 150hp hopefully more but i know i will not get 200 or prolly even close im realistic. tell me if i could even get 150. thank you for all your help. the reason i wanna do a d series build is because i dont want to spend like 2 grand just to swap in a b16a2 which is 160 hp.thank you please no one who just wants to be mean and dumb. please just some helpful tips. THANK YOU

Never done a sohc head swap but I think ul just need the head, ecu (if u want vtec to work properly or a chipped ecu), head gasket, timing belt and waterpump for whatever head u have. Should b doable for well under 500 bucks. There r ton of stuff out there search "minime".

Now on the 150hp, its not going to happen without extensive mods and tuning. Ur essentially putting together a factory d16z6 which makes 125hp at the crank. Without high compression and big cams + tuning u wont be able to feel anything that regular boltons will provide. So if u want a minime with more than 130hp without completely breaking the bank ul have to use some sort of forced induction. Nitrous is def the best bang for the buck....initially but will add up over time. This way u can add up to 75hp or as little as 35hp. Turbo is the best way to go if u have a lil more dough intially. the turbo route will b limited by the strength of ur pistons and rods as will anthing else that will put u above 200hp.

Good luck

use a z6 head, it's better in the long run over using a y8 head....i'm pretty sure you only need the ecu (p28) and wire the vtec stuff in unless you have a vtec wire harness currently......i think the gasket's are the same as well as the timing belt and waterpump....you should get it done for a 150-200 bucks if you do the installation yourself or have someone help you for free

as far as hp figures, don't even look for 150whp in a N/A dseries without gobs of money. people using P29 pistons and some topend work have only made close to 135whp....if you want cheap power out of a D you have to force induct it by better means of a turbo versus a blower (SC)......with a turbo and a GOOD tune you can make a little over 200whp on that ZC/z6 combo pretty reliably, the key is the tune though

also when you mention a b16 having 160hp, that's crank horsepower not at the wheels

vtec head swap+turbo setup(smaller turbo)+good tune= very fun car with 200+hp at the wheels

PS. anything over 160whp on boost with a small turbo makes for a fun yet reliable street car

First off thank you for the good replies and help!!!
so heres what im going to do, do the z6 mini-me swap and build for turbo.
my idea for how much this will cost is
$300 for mini me swap
Around $500-$600 for complete turbo setup

Now my question is what do i do, and what kind of parts do i get to make this a reliable turbo motor. i want to see 200+ to the wheel. but nothing prolly over 250+ this is my daily not a race car lol. and since it is my daily i need it to be RELIABLE! what parts/internals do i need to do this? and please with exact part and price. so saying the swap and turbo will be around $900-$1000 i would not like to spend more then $500 extra on parts but if i have to i will. THANKS AGAIN ALOT!

200whp is safe on a stock D if you want more you'll need to replace your weakest leak in that motor which is the connecting rods which are pencil thin .

get any one of these combos on a budget

eagle/vitara scat/vitara FJR/vitara custom lengthFJR/vitara TT/vitara

the turbo size you should be looking at for your goals would be

T3/T4 50trim or 57trim turbo Borg Warner,Garrett,turbonetics,presicion

I've heard mixed results on EBAY turbo kits

you can piece together your own , but start out with at least a good turbo and find a shop to do some custom pipes for you , find a tuner , if you look around you can piece together a kit

ok well since youve said a stock d16 can handle 200 to the wheel should i just forget the head swap and just start piecing together my turbo kit and plan for a really good tune?

When I was freshening my D15B up (water, oil pump, cleaned the intake mani, etc) I came to the conclusion that the price to get the power I wanted wasn't worth staying D series. I would honestly suggest a B, H or F series. D series is cheap, but if you're rebuilding anyway, a block is cheap and the only thing that makes it that much more expensive is a b series head and transmission. Otherwise your pistons, rods, axles, clutches a lot of that stuff is about the same price.

If you have the knowledge, piecing a b18c1 together or even a b20vtec would be cheap. Or an F23 or H22...or the frankenstein "G23" is something I've wanted to build for a long time. Or J swaps are cheap. K24 motors are cheap to the point a K swap is becoming more affordable...but still like 5k.

i think its safe to say you need at least $2000-$3000 to make any good power reliably
pieced together turbo kit around $1000 if you find good deals
tuning plus software license at least $300
other misc. parts like gauges, spark plugs, exhaust, etc $400
and other things you might need or want

Sure but a head can b had for so cheap I say go vtec and turbo. If that 200 bucks is keeping u from turboing than skrew the head but If ur that low on funds I dont c a reliable turbo d series in ur future
