Icon2 need help with 2002 si in limp mode

hello, i not to long ago picked up a 2002 honda civic si with a k20a3 in it, but its not the original motor cause it threw a rod threw the block so the guy bought a motor off ebay. well when he got the new motor in he went to start it and for some reason it was locked up he said it was cause of time chain or something lol i dont know whole story but whatever he did he got it running. well when i got it, it was in limp mode and leaked oil like sieve from timing chain cover and front main. b4 i did any work to it i took it to advanced and had the codes pulled it pulled running to rich and crankshaft postion sensor. anyways i tore it apart and the previous guy messed with timing so i retimed it and put new front main and regasketd timing cover started it still check engien light was on and in limp mode. it idels alot smother now but almost at 2000 rpms with out leaking oil. took it back to advanced still pulls crank sensor. so i did alot of reading on all the fourms and some say that there is a good possabilty that car wont run if sensor is bad. so just out of boredum today i went out and pulled plug off the crank sensor and the car still started and ran like it did before. now just so i dont waste the money and risk buying new sensor and it not solve the problem what are some steps i can do to make sure everything is in proper working order leading to sensor. i looked at plug and the pins on sensor looks okay to me. but im not the best with knowing where all the wires are or go or what to look for is ground and whats not so any help on what to do would be great. very sorry for long post just wanted to describe the best i could. thank you for reading
