Default Montana CRX build thread.

Well, I figure I should get a build thread going for this car. It's my son's first build thread. He's not much about hanging out on the forums, so I'm gonna get the ball rolling. I mentioned to him that it's important to document the build, and you can store information about the car here in the thread and refference it later.

I'll have him come by later and tell us what he'd like to do to the car, and what direction and styling he likes.

Car runs great, is pretty straight, little or no rust at all. We G-tech'd it right off the bat. Here's what it ran as we got it.

1) 17.199@82.91, 0-60=10.17seconds
2) 17.422@79.14, 0-60=10.53seconds

2nd pass, had some wheelspin in 1st gear. Not to embarrassing for the little HF. Fun car.

Well, let's see what happens.

So this is what happens, when you can't source crx parts.you get a civic front end on a crx.

looks like we found a GSR engine for the rex. Found it in a roached out project car. Guy claims it has a sleeved bottom end, aftermarket rods and pistons, springs retainers, clutch and aftermarket axles. I guess we'll see how it goes, we swung the deal for the car.

Started working on the seats. Randon found some old D.A.D. seats (dynamic auto design) I'd purchased for a Rabbit build quite a while back, hanging out in the corner of the garage. Turns out... was 2002 according to the receipt on the box... He dug on the seats, so we had to figure out how to mount them. We didn't want to just bolt them through the floor with nuts or bolt heads hanging out under the car. We liked the idea of being able to use the factory bolt locations for quick seat changes. So that's how we designed this seat base. I've made my fair share of seat bases, but usually it's just something that bolts through the floor, rather unceremoniously. This one had to use the existing mounts. AND, he's taller than I'm at over 6', so we had to make sure the seat (still on a full slider) was as low as we could get it for head room including a helmet. No easy feat in a Rex.

This is what we came up with.

The rear slider bolts on the seat, rest on the carpet. I think if we cut the carpet out, and peened a small spot in the floor. and ground the bolt flush with the nut, we could lower it perhaps another 3/4".

Does anybody know if the CRX floor and seat mounts are the same as the EF's? I might make a jig to make this quicker on the next go round.

I think we're going to end up making another set of seat bases with no sliders. As the only person normally driving the car is the owner, why not absolutely lock the seat into his favorite position? Also would help lower the seat about 1.5 inches, putting the driver lower in the car as well which is better for road racing.

Going to start thinking about a roll bar design, a traction bar design, battery box and a few other fun projects.

We already have a buyer for the EF engine and trans. Guy offered us $200 for the complete d15b2 swap, so we took it (hella good deal for him!). The early plan is to utterly strip the EG sedan and junk it. I'd quarter it up if guys need major body pieces. Or sell the shell with title, come and get it $100. Plan on skidding it onto your trailer... it ain't gonna be a roller of any kind.. think "shell".

Nah, better than JDM it's a hella-sweet "CDM" body panel kit. "Canadian Domestic Market".... not a lot of guys do it or know about it, pretty obscure next level stuff. I think it was about $6500 and came on a RHD car front half we had air freighted in. We put the bumper cover stuff on and scrapped the "played" RHD conversion. It's just how we roll. I suspect the Honda Tuning magazine dudes phones are ringing off the hook about it...

There was so much "hokey" wiring with old stereo and alarm stuff, it was decided to pull the dash and clean up the wiring. While the dash was out, we took the opportunity to pull the A/C stuff out permanently and fill the firewall to tidy it up.

There is now talk of a full wire tuck and shave this winter. Ambitious!

Looks a little better.

Modded the battery tray so we could use the red strap, put some fresh paint on some Tokico drop coilovers.

Before

after

Cleaned up, painted and ready for install.
