Icon6 2009 Honda Civic Si leaking around oil filter

I got an oil change around 6/16/2010. Went on vacation 06/25/2010. Drove around 3000 miles during the vacation. On the way home the oil light flickered when I was about 20 miles from home. The next morning I check under the car and the whole bottom had oil on it. I checked the dipstick and there was no oil. I called the company that did the oil change and they came with oil. We put oil in and I drove it to the shop. They checked it and figured that the oil was leaking out /around the filter. They cleaned up the bottom and did an oil change. I went back three more times and it was still leaking around the oil filter. Each time they wiped around the bottom and checked the filter, checked the oil sensor. At this point they can not figure out why it leaking. I took it to a Honda dealer, guess what they replaced the filter. Well it is still leaking around the filter. This car is still fairly new and should not be leaking oil. Any thoughts/suggestions would be great. I will be going to Honda again tonight.

Are you aware of any damage this caused to your motor?

have i ever mentioned it's a bad idea to let those 'jiffy lube'-type places change your oil? the oil light doesn't flicker until the oil pressure is way low. no suggestions other than letting the dealership figure it out

highly doubtful that this has been missed 3-4 times but maybe your oil filter is being "double-gasketed" from the old gasket on the old oil filter. the old gasket stayed on and then the new oil filter did not sit flat.

otherwise take it to the dealership since your car is new and under warranty.

That's what I would check on also. As a first guess it can't hurt. Also, don't let anyone change your oil unless it's the dealer.

I am amazed that all those lube shops are still in business.

Same here, I used to take my car there to get my car serviced all the time. Until, I actually had a conversation with a few of the employees and they had no idea what they were talking about when they were trying to tell me about my car. I was very disappointed in that, and I would not go there ever again to get my car service to know that, I had people who didn't have a clue what they were talking about or doing to be working on my car.

Some dealerships are just as retarded to. I can speak from experience because I have witnessed it personally.

No institution whether be it an chain or dealership is not going to screen or pay for people who actually know what they're talking about. First guy that's cool with the pay and fit the minimal criteria is in. Two pence.

I wouldn't even let the dealer change it. The last time I took my car into the dealer for an oil change, the tech never checked the final level and shorted me a quart.

Me too. Especially when you can get an oil change at the dealer for half that price if not free. Of course if you take it to the dealer they do that stupid gazillion point inspection and take like 3 hours.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but let me see if I follow a few people's logic here:

- Take vehicle to a quick lube joint

- Only AFTER quick lube joint screws up oil change the engine now leaks oil

- Take it to Honda "since it's still under warranty and shouldn't be leaking oil"

I'll tell you what. Why not smash the car into a brick wall and take it back to Honda for a coolant leak, and while you're at it let them fix the damaged body work too since "it's still under warranty and shouldn't be like that." I know my example is extreme, but it's really no different. Someone else CAUSED the oil leak, but yet you guys expect Honda to warranty it?

This is some flawed "logic" IMO.

As far as the actual leak goes I'll echo that the oil filter housing/cooler assembly might have been loosened when Johnny Quickluber took a pair of Channel Locks (actually the Wal-Mart knock off version) to your filter to get it off the first time.

I do find it odd that the dealership hasn't at least found out why it's still leaking oil...

Oh and to expound upon the topic of dealerships:

You guys understand that dealerships are privately owned, and operated? This means that two dealerships within a 20 mile radius can charge wildly different prices, have completely different scheduled maintenance plans, and can have wildly different skill leveled employees. Unfortunately there is no "all dealerships are (insert adjective here)" statement because they all vary too much.

BTW:

Note parts #16, #17, and #21 - any combination of which could have been compromised during an oil change by a moron:

if its coming from the filter, then they either could've tightened the filter too much or too little. but if its 21, which is the gasket for the oil cooler, thats definitely not good. but if its 16 or 17, you might end up having to replace both.

Hello OP. Did one figured out this leak? Im having the same problem and my car is getting drenched in the bottom. Ive changed the filter 4 times just to be safe. the cooler bolt is tight. The oil pressure switch seems dry. Whatever is leaking is making my axle fling it everywhere so hard to pinpoint. I changed filter and cleaned it all up and put it on the light and let it run but no leak. I take it for a 10 mile drive and my car is soaked again. Its all on the passenger side. The pcv valve is also good.

Anyone have any ideas?

Might want to PM the OP instead of asking in a 4 year old thread... just an idea!
